McDonalds is going to love this one ...

It took me a while to realize that cutting carbs, not fat was the way to diet .. seems like the Americans are catching on too ..

    TCD was right ... misinformation

But I still think too little Americans exercise!

    Well, not entirely.

    Cutting calories is first.

But cutting carbs and manipulating their consumption produces a more favourable fat burning environment.

Oh, and cutting out refiend sugars is very important - for general health, not just bodyfat reduction.

This article is utter garbage. Here is one quote...

"As far as exercise and physical activity go, there are no reliable data before the mid-80's, according to William Dietz, who runs the division of nutrition and physical activity at the Centers for Disease Control; the 1990's data show obesity rates continuing to climb, while exercise activity remained unchanged. This suggests the two have little in common."

So exercise and obesity have no relation to one another, that is laughable. So I guess it does not matter if I go to the gym or sit on the couch. Go figure. I find it funny how he also states that their is no hard scientific evidence to support these diets he pushes, only anecdotal evidence. So I guess he can just pick and choose when anecdotal evidence supports or disproves a hypothesis.

It is also notable that the author points out that the ketogenic diet improves HDL as effectively and triglycerides more effectively than a low fat diet. Wow, no mention of blood pressure, which is sure to increase on a diet high in fat as a result of the increased sodium intake which generally comes hand in hand with the Atkins Diet.

    This article is written by

Gary Taubes is a correspondent for the journal Science and author of ''Bad Science: The Short Life and Weird Times of Cold Fusion.''

Funny that the name of his book is "Bad Science" seeing how he did not give one lick of scientific evidence to back up his assertions. Not one of the statistics he gives comes with an accompanying citation that I can use to look up and see if he made it up or it actually came from some research.

I am not saying that he is right or wrong, I am just saying that he is doing just what he accuses the FDA of doing by not backing up his shyt. I actually am doing a low carb diet now and have done the Anabolic diet with success and gained back no fat, but I am more well informed than the average joe who would read that article.

w8, try this link to read the article, it should work without a password.

Also, I don't read what they wrote as saying that there's no link between exercise and obesity. I read it as, if you look at the fact that people are getting fatter, yet exercise levels have remained the same, then that rules out exercise as a variable that has contributed to the rise in obesity, since it's a variable that has remained constant.

    Belgium and exercises

    Hey,
I was once in Belgium. You guys invented soo many sorts of beer etc. that it is mind-boggling. In Brussels, I saw restaurants everywhere...and people overeating. (It's easy when food is so delicious). But: no fitness facilities in hotels, no swimming pools, certainly no free tennis courts like we have it here in the US.
So, Americans are no doubt lazy and overeating. But Western Europeans (whatever that means) are not far behind! I think that the structure of diet (more sugary foods here), plus a little less driving (we drive everywhere), and maybe different conservants, contribute mainly to American obesity.

Ain't that a fact .. I must admit that most of the time, I am ashamed in their place.

Dunc: I don't think the correlation between exercise and obesity should be disregarded,
but certainly diet is more important in the process of loosing weight than trying to get rid of those calories than jogging etc...
(What do you see in the treadmill section of the gym? Fatasses ... they do 40mins of stationary biking, and afterwards jug down a gallon of energy drinks because they think it'll help them "recover").

Remember: what we do to loose weight (those measly 6 pounds of left-over fat) isn't neccesarily what works for a seriously overweight individual.
I wouldn't like to see my mom on a hometrainer before she looses 80lbs or so!

There must be something wrong, because everyday more and more people join gyms, the number of joggers has doubled in half a year where I live,
and yet I'm seeing more and more fat people .. go figure ?

P.S. Two weeks ago KFC opened in the City I live in .. that's not good ... sigh .. as if 9 Mickey D's wasn't enough!

    Agreed Preach.

I think it is a general laziness that people have which makes them obese. They are too lazy to walk from their cars, too lazy to take the stairs, too lazy to not hit McD's and prepare their own food.

But, hey wut r ya gonna do.

Heard on the radio that the AMA (Amercian Medical Association) has finally gotten wise and has admitted that Dr. Atkins was right.. cut Carbs and eat good fats to lose fat!!! Gee it only somewhere near 25 years to admit this.

No if I can convince everyone I know that fats aren't bad!!!!
