Bulking help

Hey, I was curious, I am 18 years old, and what I would assume is a fairly high metabolism, and was wondering if I ate completely clean, (not a problem for me on a bulk, where I can have delicious fruits and sweet potatoes and whatnot) if I should still limit myself to a certain caloric intake, or just go on a free for all and eat everything clean in sight. Mainly, I am just curious if while eating clean will I have to worry any about putting on fat? I assume I wouldn't put on much, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

I wanna put on an a**load of muscle, but still try to keep my bf to a minimum, and from some of the other things I have read people say don't worry and just eat. And I LOVE eating.

Again, in case anyone forgot my stats:

18 years old
135 pounds
5'5" - 5'6" (not entirely sure)
fairly lean and muscular build, though i do have a little fat (most of it seems to actually be on my face, so I don't look fat unless I have clothes on which just happens to be ALL the time!)

If you need anymore info on me, just ask

Having a cheat day or two a week in which you can eat anything you want is ok, but eating everything in site will only cause you to gain bodyfat. It will be alot harder to lose the bf if you pig out now. I dont know what your goals are other than putting muscle on, but piggin out is never good. You tend to not get the nutrition you need to reapir your muscles when you eat like an oinker ( i should know i am post comp right now). So keep your self clean for 6 days and pig out one day and maybe have a cheat food in the middle of the weak. At your age though, you should gain muscle quite easy so dont limit yourself and diet hard. You need to make sure you have a carb, protein and essential fat with each meal plus your veggies. Any more questions, dont hesitate to ask.

....and thats my $.02

No, no, no you misunderstood me J'Bo. I have absolutely no intentions of cheating whatsoever while bulking, believe me i am QUITE satisfied with delicious clean foods like sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and brown rice. So I'm saying if I go COMPLETELY CLEAN, then should i still have some sort of caloric limit, or can I eat as much as I want?

If you are truly eating clean, and you have a fast metabolism as you say, you will probably be able to eat more than one normally would....as far as an actual caloric limit, you need to eat as much as you need in or to gain, clearly and this limit may change periodically as you gain muscle...at your age, stats and metabolism, that could be a whackload of food! .... but there will be a time when you eat more calories than necessary and may begin gaining fat. I think it would be truly benefical for you to log your food, just to see what your body needs in order to gain.

I am totally serious about eating clean, I've just never been entirely sure about how many calories to eat on a bulk, so I was just gonna eat until I was full, then eat some more.

I do, however, have no problem keeping a journal, w8, and I think I will, as it should be quite beneficial. It would definitely help if someone helped me out on how many calories I should begin with. Just any like rough idea of calories and a good bulking macronutrient profile, or where I could find that.

Also, I was kind of curious on how detrimental a clean free for all would be because, well, I LOVE eating!!!

LOL...okay, well since you're up for journaling I have a project for you

Weigh yourself tomorrow morning....log your food intake for at least three days ( a week is better) and average your calories. At the end of your three days or however many you choose to do, weigh yourself again...if you have kept the same weight, you know your taking in enough calories to maintain your current weight and in order to gain your going to have to add some calories in there. If you've gained any w8, then you know you're eating enough to gain and this would be the kcal range you should shoot for on a daily basis...keeping in mind that it will go up as you grow. If however, you've lost w8....then.....eat more

A clean free-for-all wouldn't likely be detrimental, but as I said already..there will become a time when you're eating too much....I think you said it well when you said to eat till your full

I would go for at least 200 g of protein, that's 1.5 g per lb BW, split evenly throughout 6 meals, the rest of your calories coming from clean, healthy, slow-burning fats/carbs.

If you have access to the net go to fitday.com...they have an easy food log you can use to keep track. It might open your eyes to how much you should be eating when you put in what you actually are. It's also easier than writing everything down and trying to figure it out.

If you're right now 135 figure out how many cals you're taking in a day and then gradually increase...the first week add 200 per day, then 300 up to 500 per day, which will pack on one pound per week.

Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.

definetly join up @ fitday...when eating clean it takes a LOT of food for the calories to add up but it's the best method by far...

I went to fitday, wow I had no idea I had to eat that many calories just to maintain. I think I underrated my activity level and it still said I had to eat like 2600 calories a day. I mean I was actually planning on eating something like 3500 calories when I started bulking, so that's ok, but I don't think I've ever regularly eaten near 2600 cals. It doesn't matter at the moment, as I really wanna get cut before I bulk, to get that fat out of the way, but I'm getting close, and gonna start bulking in a couple weeks or so. Another thing I would be really interested in finding out is what is a good macronutrient profile for bulking, anyone feel free to add in your own ideas. I was thinking 40/30/30 p/c/f, but then i saw one that was 30/50/20, I think it was LAM, who I'm sure is more knowledgeable than I. So, yeah, any advice and comments are welcome.

LVS....I think the 40/30/30 is better IMO, but you really need to play w/ it...pick one thing and adjust it accordingly.

One thing though....I've never found fitday's activity/calories burned info to be quite right. I use it only for logging my food.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else is using fitday to track their activities/calories burned.
