One exercise in particular: The "away from the refrigerator push".
Eat less. That's it.
Welcome back.![]()
Hi Guys,
Long time, no post here.
At nearly 34 years old, I've just started to notice a bit of belly fat. It's the most I've ever had, and hopefully not the start of some middle aged spread.
Obviously I'd like to catch it quick, and do what I can fast before it gets worse.
My first question is whether or not targeting the abs will cause any weight loss
specifically in that area, or is that just a misconception?
Will better diet and increased exercise of all body parts help tuck my belly in firmer?
Any extra hints to help trim my belly?
Cheers, Art.
If not actually, then potentially.

I don't really think my diet has changed over the last four years (I think it's been that long).
My excercise definitely has... I don't look anything like the avatar anymore,
but I'm back in business now though.
I used to have the worst diet on record, but never saw any consequences for ti.

Yeah, sucks no longer being young.

Start tracking. Let's see where you are now.
Something good that I once read here in relation to spot reduction was an analogy.
Lets say you fill a glass with water and then someone tells you that they only want you to pour the water from the middle of the glass, you can try but in the end you have no control over where the water is actually coming from, the only thing you can control though is the amount of water that you pour out.
It’s the same concept as gaining weight, you cant choose where you gain weight, generally it just accumulates randomly over a period of time.
Being that you are getting older, your metabolism will be slowing and what you were once eating was able to maintain your weight is now an excess so you can either lower your caloric intake or keep eating the way you are and increase your work rate.
If you are not working out as much ab work will bring back the definition that you might have had.
if or when you loose extra BF% you will start to see the difinition come back.
Think of it like pre conditioning.
I suppose I'm interested in whether ab workouts will take fat off the gut
more quickly than say, a bicep workout, or a cardio workout?
By your analogy, the answer would appear to be No.
If not actually, then potentially.

Correct. The only thing that is going to take off the fat is dieting and perhaps some basic HIIT. Read Built's blog for more info on that.
