    Whey protein on a cut

Currently cutting: is it bad to have whey protein shakes (mixed with water) as snacks, as well as post-work out? I currently make a protein shake twice a day as a snack, and also after a cardio session or weight training.

    Why would it be bad?

As long as it fits into your caloric requirements, and you are below maintenance should be fine.

depends how cut you want to get!

remember whey proteins and other protein supplements are just that.....supplement's ! The absorption rate is less than that of real whole foods, so, the more whole food protein sources you can find, the better ie, chicken, fish, lean red meat. Don't get me wrong, protein powders are awesome but your alway's better with real food.

a fast digesting protein such as whey is great post w/o and i would suggest you keep taking it in as long as you have no problems with supps.

if you have probl'ems with supps or you are on a very low calorie diet and want more whole food feel free to sub egg whites post w/o for a fast digesting protein.

They are fine, but they are best as an addition to a meal. Just a whey protein drink is not really enough for a snack in my opinion.

It would be better if you added some nuts or other healthy fats, and maybe a piece of fruit or some other carbs (some people take fruit out completely on a cut). Otherwise, the whey alone is going to run right through you in like 30 minutes.

I agree with squanto - whey's not very satisfying. On a cut, with limited calories, I prefer to chew what little food I get to eat.

While I agree that "real" food is a more nourishing option, I'm curious how the absorption of whey protein is somehow lower than it is for "real" food.

It's not. The absorption rate for whey protein is actually higher than most foods as it is digested within 20 minutes or so literally and goes straight to the bloodstream. There is very little waste in whey protein, but it also lacks a lot of the benefits of whole foods like you stated.
