how to convince my girlfriend that weight training will not bulk her up...
more than that really. read the bold part at the bottom if you are lazy.
i have lost 20 pounds in the last couple of years that we have been together with diet and just weight training. only recently have i started HIIT cardio. everyone says i look so skinny all the time compared to before in front of her and you think that would be some motivation. ive dropped alot of hints which can make her quite mad about her consuming too much sugar, carbs, not enough protein and about her lack of workout routine. shes not crazy obese or anything but she recently informed me that she weighs 30 pounds more than me!( i weigh 155)she is also a couple inches shorter than me. she is very cute and has a great rack as well as a very good personality. i really do love her but i wish she would just trim up a bit and get the motivation to do so. when she did work out all she did is the typical female cardio bullshit and i didnt really see any results.like alot of girls she was afraid the weights would bulk her up.even her moms has been doing the south diet thing with alot of success. Shes not one of those girls who is comfortable being big. she has expressed interest in losing some weight. her genetics arent so great though. she has been around this weight since college a few years ago.so basically....I want to convince her to have a strict diet and to start a strict training schedule. i think she will thank me later. how can i do this without seeming like a insensitive prick?she is a bit sensitive so i dont want to make her cry. I know she will thank me when she sees results. |

you can talk to her and try to explain how good it makes you feel and that you just want her to experience the same feelings, or if you're willing even make it something you guys can do together as a couple, but ultimately it is going to be her choice and i find some people just have the ambition and motivation and others simply don't...

she weighs 185... wow, they must be bigger than your head.
That being said, lead by example. I actually am in a similar situation, where an overweight friend of mine wonders why she cant lose weight, and in the meantime, does that cardio that you are talking about where they dont break a sweat, and her weight routine consists of endless repetitions on the leg abductor, and the crunch machine. Then at lunch, while im eating a chicken breast with peas and a sweet potato, shes eating poutine. What ive been doing, is SINCE she has complained about it (i dont like to preach to people who dont want to hear it) I say things like "its hard to lose weight, but you should try and focus on eating less carbs and more protein." and then explain to her that its a much better choice to order a chicken stirfry then fries or cheese pizza. or ill give her anecdotes about what works for ME i.e "when i do cardio, i burn so much more calories when im running hard, even though its difficult at first, it works great. you should try it." The most important thing is to be super positive, and to explain to her that she can do it, and that you will help her all the way. you DEFINITELY, need to tread carefully here my friend... talking to overweight women about losing weight is like playing catch with a grenade... it can blow up in your face if you dont do it properly. OR, you could tell her that unless she loses 20 lbs by christmas, your ending it. either way. |

Dont come from a need to get bigger perspective, but rather give her positives of weight lifting. Improves posture, increases metabolism, fights off diseases, thats just to name a few

If you need to convince her, just show her the routines/training commonly done by hollywood celebs (easily recognizable names). Angelina Jolie lifts weights and trains and she is not bulky by any means. The same goes for olympic athletes.
Oh, and Jamie Eason. She is the ultimate proof. Ultimate. |

Tell her that you, her and every other person in the gym is generally trying to do the same thing! Increase lean mass and lose fat. Its just a matter of intensity and diet that determines whether or not she gets bulky or just "toned".

I was 170 lbs when I started.
This was what happened after four years of weight training and careful diet: ![]() Tell her to read this: Got Built? » Keeping it going - the evolutionary process of fat loss In fact, she can read here and read from the top down: Got Built? » Open Source Fitness - Get started here If she's worried about "bulking up", well, I've been really, really TRYING to pack on mass. It has taken me seven years to pack on the whopping 12 or so pounds of lean mass I've managed. In doing so I've gone from a size 14 to a size two. Thank GOD I gave up jogging! |
