Is 1 gm/lb of protein too much?

I have been reading that if ur doing wt training and want to build muscles, you need 1 gm/lb of protein every day. Even the Whey Jar says the same. I am 170 lbs so that translates to 170 gms of protein per day

On the other hand I read this article
    Protein & Diet Information
which sugggest that protien should be 0.8 gm/kg which for me translates to 62 gms of protein per day, which is 1/3rd of what point 1 suggests !!

Can someone advise the correct requirement. Should I just take an average and settle at 100 gms/day? I do weight training 4 days a week for 60 minutes each day.

Generally most people will probably say that is a minimum.

for one the body isnt 100% effective at absorption. So you overshoot your intake to make sure you have enough. Please drink plenty of water and get lots of fiber to help your body cope with a high protein diet.

merkaba, thanks for the reply. when u say ample water. is 5 litres enough for a day.. Also any problems to liver due to high intake of protein? Are you saying that if I take 100 gms of protein per day, maybe only 50% of that will be used by the body or something.. Gosh excess protein causes flatulence

Protein doesn't cause any damage to you, the excessive protein comes out as pee when you urinate.

Highly elevated protein levels put stress on the kidneys

Its amazing to me that some of these dieticians and physio people that I have encountered believe in not having to intake any protein drinks and blatantly saying they are a waste of money. I just read an article stating that 8 grams of protein after a workout is sufficient. HA! Im not taking away from all the school they paid for, but lets be real here, do you really think weightlifters will gain muscle size off of that kind of diet? And yes, they are referring to people who lift weights, and not your everyday person.
