what to have before a workout
hi guys, haven really been posting that much lately, just been getting on with it. a few questions to ask if you dont mind.
in order for me to peform to the best i can in a workout whats the best thing to have before, and how soon before. i can have 2 whey protien powder shakes a day, so should i have one before the workout (if so then how many mins before the workout) and one straight after the workout. Or are carbs more inportant before a workout because they give you energy. but am i right in saying the release energy slowy over a long period of time, so if carbs are better before a workout they how many grams, and how soon before the workout. so to sum up: - what are the best times in the day to have my 2 protien shakes? - what is the best thing i can have before and how soon before for a workout for me to perform at my best. thanks in advance. |

How often do you generally eat, what macros/calories do you run, and what time of day do you train?
The reason I ask is if you're eating fairly typical bodybuilder rations and eating more than three times a day (which most of us do), the timing of your pre and postworkout nutrition isn't nearly as critical as you're thinking. If you're training first thing in the AM, yeah, try to get some fairly fast protein and carb into you before you train. Maybe a shake with some toast or rice first thing, then sip a whey/dex shake through your workout, then eat a solid meal right after. I'd further suggest eating a modest protein and fat meal at bedtime, but most of us do this anyway I think. If you train in the later part of the day, with a few meals under your belt, as long as you're not entirely running on empty, just sip a whey/dex shake while you train and knock back another one on your way home for a solid meal. If you haven't eaten within say two hours of training, you might do well to get in a shake before you train. I generally have some cottage cheese and a little fruit, maybe some raw nuts or natty PB about an hour before I walk into the gym, then protein and fairly fast carb right after. If I can afford the calories, I sip a dilute whey/dextrose shake during my workout. Does this help?
Wondering where to start? Confused? This will get you started.

for me lately i've been eating a bowl of oatmeal (2/3 C dry) with a scoop of chocolate whey protein powder (approx 40g of pro) mixed in about an hour before i train
seems to do the trick just fine |
