Define excess? Id say 3 times a day is enough. I wouldnt go anymore than that.

I think morning and night is plenty. Maybe the products you are using is causing it.

If you overscrub or wash more than 2-3 times per day then you strip oils from your skin, which makes your pores produce more oil and get blocked = acne & spots. So stick to twice daily if you can (3 max), don't use overharsh products and moisturise. Yes it might seem daft to add cream/oils to spotty skin but it'll prevent the above problem from occuring.

I had hormonal acne for the first 3o yrs of my life - my guess due to naturally higher estrogen levels. When I hit my first 'age-related hormone change' at age 37, I noticed for the first time in my life, that my skin wasn't an oil slick and even my hair was much less oily. (==> estrogen drop!)

That said, I've spent all those years avoiding moisturizers and moisturizer soap, using strictly Ivory. But that dries the bejeezus out of your skin, so then your body responds by producing more oil. End result - dry areas, more acne.

A couple years ago I started using Shu Uemura Moisturizer / oil - which is not a greasy moisturizer but rather just a light oil that works w /my skin's oil as a cleanser and I've had significantly less issue w/ acne & dry skin.

So I think generally 2x / day is sufficient to clean your skin, but I think it also matters what you're using. Trying to use a dry-inducing product may actually force more acne.

I'm 37 and I'm still using acne control products. Runs in my family. Washing twice a day helps prevent acne. Less than that and my acne worsens. So, I'd say, more washing = better.

As I stated above - depends on what you are using to clean. I used Ivory for decades - but the result is that my skin got so dried out that it would respond by producing more oil ==> more acne. So the end result is dried out skin w/ zits. So then its just a lot of back & forth of you trying to dry your skin out more, your skin responding by trying to balance w/ more oil.

More washing w/ the wrong stuff can just dry your skin out more.

In fact this also goes for hair as well.

Acne depends on what products you are using to wash your face. If you are using those products which are taking away your face oil then you would get stretched skin at the end So observe your skin type and then do any kind of experiments.

I think Sassy is on point. Too much drying will cause the skin to over produce oil. I was reading and jojobo oil helps regulate the skins natural oil production.

I had a bad case of acne after a cycle and tried all kinds of combinations from Target. It got maybe 25% better but I still looked like a teenage kid. My last resort before trying something as sever as accutane, was acne.org(I googled it and it had really high reviews).

    His products are here
    Acne Products

Its a three step process with benzol peroxide(2.5%). He claims that the 10% is overkill and cleans the same way as 2.5% without drying the skin out. One week later and my skin went to 75% better. Id say its worth the small investment and he has a guarantee that if you dont like it, just send it back.

I know the above wasnt asked, just felt like I should promote(I am in no way affiliated with the company) what I felt worked since we are talking about acne.

    Good luck

Acne.org has the best price on benzoyl peroxide that I've found anywhere. After accutane, the best acne treatment is benzoyl peroxide imo. I tried lots of things. Just be careful what clothes you wear, it can bleach them.

Been using it for a couple weeks now and it has cleared 75%. I have accutane on hand but I am holding off just to make sure it doesn't get worse then the current situation. Acne.org will be getting a lot of business from me. Face cleaner is nice and the BP is a damn great price. Not too keen on the moisturizer.

No it's not true it'll just make your face a lot dryer. Use lotion if you wash your face that much. If you got acne problems use Clean and Clear it works pretty fast.
