Sport, next year, yeah ... if I lose too much weight I'll be sub 200 and then, well ... I'll get a whomping like I've never felt before. More distance will be fun!
First race was Tallahassee ... hometown ... smoked the competition! There are a few good long lung killer leg burning climbs. This of course lured me into the series. (1st place)
2nd was Deerfield Beach, near Ft. Lauderdale. It was very technical, but completely flat. I lost both my water bottles in a small wreck on my first lap, which sucked. This course was new to this series. (1st place)
3rd was ... Belleview ... I took an early lead, but this guy Rob was on my tail the whole time. We were talking, and I knew he wasn't going to stay behind me forever, he wasn't even breathing hard. In the last 3 miles of the 2nd lap, he put some serious time over me ... The course was steep on the first and last mile, but inbetween was flat and super fast ... (2nd place)
4th was Gainesville. It's a private course that is only used for racing. It's not very rocky, but super steep climbs make most people walk. Last year I walked all the climbs, this year I passed people walking them ... (1st place)
5th was Jacksonville. I broke my rear shifters in my pre-ride, so I raced fixed gear. I was in the lead until a small spill put me in 2nd ... then with about a mile left, I started cramping, so 2 more got by ... I took 4th. Jacksonville is super sandy and rooty. There are a few short "ups" (let's not call them hills).
6th was Miami. I broke an axel in my pre-ride, and borrowed a front wheel for the race. Started without a hitch ... then I got a rear flat 2 miles into it, and my CO2 screwed up, so I started walking. Took 11th. Waste of 14 hours of driving, except I got the bonus points for starting the race
7th was Brandon (near Tampa). Very fast course. In my pre-ride I almost hit a wild pig!!! I needed to beat a guy to stay in the runnings, and he took an early lead. Later on he took a bad line and we passed him *phew*. A local guy who'd been at all the races was right on my tail the whole time, finally he went by, he earned it ... and I took 2nd.
8th ... Reddick, it's near Ocala. Pretty technical and bunch of climbs. It was a lot of fun. I took an early lead because of the climbs, and just never looked back. I was worried though because Rob showed up (only other race he was at he beat me). The last few miles I was dying, but pushed through for a 1st place on the series finale.
In all the races last year I got almost last place ... and couldn't get up a lot of the climbs, always felt like I was overheating, etc ... I think I gained a place or two for every 3 lbs I lost ...
It was fun as hell overall. I'm not usually super competitive, but when I started having bike malfunctions, I got really pissed and stressed out about the points, which totally isn't me.
Anyways, it was really neat to get a plaque and win some cool shwag (helmet, jersey, pump, gloves, bag, windbreaker ...) ...
I've talked to the shop about a road bike so I can train ... we'll see ...
