I've had a dull, annoying pain in the area of my right shoulder for 2-3 months now. It's definitely more on the backside of the shoulder and almost feels like it's as much upper back as it is shoulder. It has not impacted my strength in any way. In fact, my lifts have increased during this time. That said, it's not going away so I'm concerned and I don't want to worsen a situation.
I've researched rotator cuff and labrum issues. It seems that a key symptom here is pain with overhead pressing movements or lateral type movements. Nope. Don't have these at all.
The pain is hard to pinpoint, but I do know this: When I put a tennis ball between the wall and along the edge of my scapula and roll it around, there definitely seems to be a small area there that could be the origin of the pain. I'm not sure if there is just a huge muscle knot in this area or if this pain is being caused by something else in the shoulder joint.
At any rate, I'm curious if the above sounds familiar to anyone else and what the implications may be?
I've been to a general practitioner (useless) and an ortho (useless). Both gave me basic strength exams which I passed. I'm now going for an MRI just to see if there's anything there.
Again, there is no strength loss here at all. I'm wondering if this could be just overtraining or something.
sounds like infraspinatous tendonits ( possibley supraspinatous as well) tough to get rid of
Not sure about infraspinatous. Seems that the pain is usually located in the upper arm and can run down to the wrist. My discomfort is definitely around the shoulder / upper back. Also, I pass all the tests for raising my arm overhead or to the side easily.
Here's an example of when I feel this annoying pain. Today, I was doing overhead dumbell presses. Went fine pressing upwards. But when I go to finish my last rep and lower the dumbell onto my knee...THAT'S when I feel it. And it's really just a slight discomfort, but it's there. Needling me.
Seems like either one of these come on slowly so while I have no problem moving my arm overhead or laterally, maybe I've caught something in the beginning stages.
Some kind of tendonitis somewhere due to overtraining wouldn't surprise me. I've been a UD2 "soldier" since last April. Went from 209 to 175 for fat loss and now I've built up to 184 on the mass program to gain lean muscle. All that's great, but maybe this is the price.
my bro has a similar problem. it took him a year for the pain to go away
So far, don't like what I'm hearing. If it is at minimum tendonitis to one of these RC muscles, it sounds like something that could grow into something far worse.
Was your brother diagnosed with something specific?
Did he continue workout out or did he go to rehab for a bit and shut it down?
My bro took off lifting for 2 years before he started up again 5 months ago. He still has pain... But the only way around it is to learn how to live with it..

Exactly what I want to avoid.
Whatever this is, I'm only 2-3 months in and we're talking just annoying discomfort right now. So, I'm hoping I caught this more than early enough.
Ideal scenario per MRI results says:
1. Take a couple weeks off, and
2. Get soft tissue work done
Starting to think this is more of a trapezius issue than a shoulder issue.
When I roll a ball between my upper back and a wall I have the most discomfort in the trap area...closer to my mid back than the shoulder and pretty high to the point where I have to arch my back to keep pressure on the area with the ball.
Hoping a trap issue is much better than a rotator cuff issue.
