Exclamation A cure for baldness ‘could be available in 5 years’

The Krauts are good, first they find the cure for aids and now cure baldness? What could possibly have held us Americans back?

For the first time, scientists in Germany have grown hair follicles from stem cells.

The feat has brought scientists a step closer to creating a cure for baldness.

The study used cells taken from animals, but researchers hope to create human hair follicles from human stem cells within a year.

Stem cells are the body’s master cells. With manipulation in the lab, they can be grown into any tissue in the human body from blood to bone and even whole organs.

Although stem cells are seen as the holy grail for medicine, progress has been slow and very few treatments are widely available.

However, Professor Roland Lauster at Berlin’s Technical University believes his work could be a step towards providing treatment for the 80 per cent of people who suffer from hair loss worldwide.

Lauster claims the treatment – which would probably require the hair follicles to be implanted on to the head – could be available in five years.

“Since 1950 the number of new chemicals used in cosmetics has risen 500—fold, and so has the need for animals to be experimented upon to ensure they are safe for humans.

This could well do away with the need for them to suffer,” he was quoted as saying.

In 2004, a team from the University of Pennsylvania in the US also produced evidence that stem cell research could help prevent baldness. However, as of yet, no baldness cure has been invented.

This is retarded. They are acting like they have done something. It has been widely accepted for years that we can recreate any cell with stem-cells. Well, big news flash, but that includes hair follicles.

Does this mean from now on we are going to have a million different articles about some lab discovering the cure to everything from crotch rot disease to smelly finger syndrome? This doesn't deserve publicity. This is a money making scam to get funding for the next pharmaceutical hair restoration idea. Anything that keeps guys with big boners and hair on their heads is bound to make a killing I suppose.

Does this mean I can finally grow a beard? My Dad had a full beard at 19 yet at 33 years old, I get on gear and I still can't grow a beard but I need to shave my back for the first time in my life!
Bring on stem cell research. Fuck the Christians and their pro-life bullshit. I want a beard just like Jesus!

Baldness is really a universal problem for all and it will be a really great achievment if its cured 100% through medicine. I hope it will be possible at last to relieve all bald persons soon.

If there was something you could take to cure baldness, I wouldn't bother. I'm just fine being bald. Hope they find a cure for people who care, though.

I have cured my advancing baldness by cutting my hair very short - not quite ready to shave my head though. I agree with the "chicks git it" statement - quite a few compliments after I cut it short, though not ready for the razor yet.

Seriously though, I'd rather have hair. Lots of it.

Yes, I am bald. But I don't need any costly stem cell therapy for my baldness. I just comb the hair on my back up to my head.

Provillus gets the job done, I've used it in the past and saw result but got lazy when everything was back to normal. 3 months later everything started shrinking again.

Do you have a clue what it takes to make a stem cell to differentiate? It's kinda a big deal when they can make stem cell repeated do what they want it to do.

There's nothing wrong about it, but some people like having their hair and would pay to keep it.

Yeah, I keep up on science and medicine. From all accounts I have heard that differentiating stim cells isn't very hard at all in rodents. This would lead to a fairly strong assumption that it is just as easy in humans if stem cell researcers were allowed to do their work without being harassed by religious nut job conservatives in government.

It has been years since scientist created a living beating human heart from stem cells. If you can make a heart, then a hair follicle should be cake. Again, that would be the case if stem-cell research were properly funded, and we have more researchers going balls to the wall. There are a lot of relented researchers who avoid stem-cell research because they are scared that the next president will be a douchebag like Bush and cut their funding.

No Scientist wants their life work shutdown in the middle of a project all for the sake of politics.

since I wear my hair long, like over half way down my back, and am looking more and more like a fucking Klingon every time I comb it... I welcome anything that will bring it back.

And I'll go Klingon before I go bald... I like my hair.
