I'd guess that the running caused it, maybe you should ease off putting load onto your shin. Maybe bike riding will substitute for cardio, as it's less impact that your shins have to go through. Hope it gets better.

Dont put weight on it. If its acute then dont worry about it. If it becomes chronic then consult physician.
Everybody wanna be a bodybuilder but dont nobody wanna lift this heavy ass weight. R.C.

shin splints suck man. the only thing i would recommend is take some time off. i went on a stupid cardio plan once that included a 40 min bike ride to and from my gym. after two weeks it destroyed em. I had to take off almost a couple months if i remember from bike, jogging, basketball and certain leg exercises.
dont push em

Ice and stay off it for a while if you do aggravate it. I also recommend lots of good stretching (e.g. put your toe high on the wall w/ your heel on the ground and lean in to stretch). Otherwise not much else you can do, In an extreme case, cortisone injections, but those dont' heal things but help reduce pain.
If you do run, try to keep off hard surfaces and stick to gravel or grass.
I still suffer from shin splints from running track in the hallways in Jr High up north because there was still 3 ft of snow on the ground when the season started. That was about 35 yrs ago.

Get some better cardio shoes, shoes are not where you should chose to save and get shit, espically if you are carrying around a little bit more wheight it's going to continue to hurt like hell! Good shoes, and stuck to something with less impact until you trim up a bit and lose a few lbs. Good luck

Bike is the way to go. I learned the hard way with shin splints, twice. As soon as you feel 'em coming on cease all high impact cardio immediately. Shin splints are painful and take a long time to heal.
