    Angry Smith Machines Are Dangerous!

I just wanted to share my recent injury that I sustained while using a Cybex smith machine. I was squating with 315 lbs. when I went to rack the weight. I heard the latches clank and felt the weight release from my body. I took a short breath and cannot remember much after that. The bar came crashing down on me and slammed me to the floor. Luckily, I had the safety catches in place or otherwise I would have been crushed by 315 lbs. I have been unable to lift since this accident due to the injuries I sustained to my back. I was wanting to warn everyone about these ridiculously dangerous machines. I have researched these machines and this is known as a "false latching," which gives the weight lifter the impression that the weight is secure, when in fact it is not. Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven't experience that but a guy at my gym had a shitload of weight on the SM while he was standing on a box doing calf raises. He was holding the bar behind his back and when he stood up on his toes he slipped off, smashed his face onto the box and the the bar came crashing down on the top of his neck breaking it instantly. Some people have no idea....

Had to call an ambulance to take him to hospital.

OP: I know. F*ck Smith Machines. I am very sorry to hear about your injury. I can't stand Smith Machines for the very reason you described; the false sense of security. That and the forced range of motion. A power rack with properly placed safety pins will not allow for a false latching. If you have to bail the pins will stop the weight. The only thing that is hurt is your pride and possibly your ears from the loud crash. I hope you have a full recovery and can get back under the weight in no time. In a proper rack this time!
