I think now a days one doesn't have to be doctor to figure out how to take care of it. You can do some research on the internet and use some common sense. It is better to get rid of the cause of the effect than keep controlling the effects through medication. The former is permanent solution to the problem, and later is just like putting a band aide on the wound. Just my two cents.

If you don't understand research, how can you determine the efficacy of a supplement? Btw, most supplements have zero scientific support and do nothing.

95% of the time, even a doctor can't determine what is causing hypertension. How the hell are you going to find it on the internet? There are so many variables that can cause it, it's virtually impossible to determine which one it is. This is why we have so many different BP meds, they act on different parts of the body, and it's usually a guessing game for the physician to find the right one. There are Diuretics, ACE inhibitors, Beta blockers, and calcium channel blockers for example.

I would counter that for most, high BP is an indicator of a malfunction elsewhere in the system. treating the symptom won't fix the problem, it will mask it at best or cause different symptoms that will cause other problems at worst. Not to mention that there is a distinct difference between the hypertension that may be caused by fluid retention in an otherwise healthy person and that of someone with occluded arteries.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

Of course it's a malfunction somewhere. The problem is that we can't determine where the malfunction lies most of the time. I agree w your statement that it can be caused by many different factors, hence the array of bp meds.

I understand and agree w the argument against only treating symptoms, but we live in a society that refuses to take their health into their own hands. The next best thing is to lower their bp through meds. And, we know that bp and cholesterol meds are keeping more and more fat and lazy Americans alive.
