Rotator cuff?

I did chest yesterday as ussuall. 4 sets of incline to start after a warmup, then went to flat. Got one set in and on the second I was coming up and it felt like someone stabbed me with a knife in my left shoulder. So I stopped, stretched and rubbed it. The pain stopped. I waited about 5 mins dropped some weight to see if that was the problem but I got the same pain rite after the 2 rep point. I stopped benching and went to try some other excersises. I got through some peck deck, and cable cross overs with minimal pain. But last night and today my shoulder is KILLING ME! Two trainers said it might be my cuff. Was wondering what oher problems it might be. It hurts like in the joint almost and has an overall throbing but I also feel it in my front delt. But the front delt feels like a sore muscel, majority of the pain is in the shoulder.

If it is the cuff what should I do? I was thinkin if he pain doesn't stop I'm going to the doctor for some x-rays or something.

HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Well, are you icing your arm?

Good thing you go though the extra sets of cross overs and peck decks, otherwise who knows what might have happened!

His arm could have ripped off

Best thing to do is get it checked out. Especially if you dont know whats wrong. Also GO EASY on it for a while. I would recommend taking glucosamine chondroitin to help with overall joint performance.

Yes I'm icing it and the peck deck/cross over were with almost no weight to see if the range of motion hurt.

ice it for a while. Don't use it for a few days. Probably just over stressed or over stretched. If you tore something you would know......trust me.

I have alot of popping and pain in my right shoulder. Doc said a rotator problem but im not getting cut on here while im in Korea!! I use a shitload of Ibuprofen and suck it up which is really the wrong answer. Hold your arm up in front of you. Try to push it down with the other arm if it hurts like hell and you have a hard time resisting good sign its the cuff

If it felt like someone stabbed you my guess is you have a tear, even if minor.

Best way to find out is to see a Sports medicine Doc or a (Orthopaedic) Physician. An MRI will be the best answer or getting it scoped(Arthroscopy).

Ya check it out right away man it put me out for about a year but i thought nothing of it when i first did it ,went along for awhille and rehurt it ,pain was so unbearable i had no choice but to check it out. A good test is to hold both arms out to side then have docter or sum one push down on both of them, another is put arms out infront of u turn ur thumbs down whille arms lifted then have sum one push down

I hurt my rotator cuff a couple years ago
but i kept working out and kept going and going
till it go really fucked up
heres the best test
put ur arm into an arm wrestling position and push it like that against ur other arm or someone elses
Itll hurt like hell if its ur cuff
I stopped working out for a while, once i realized it was really stupid to work it out
Now it almost never hurts even when i do inlince bench, which used to kill it...

oh and after it rests for a while, be sure to jack off every other day for a month...LOL
That is good for it because its very very lightly working it
kinda like stretching it :P

when i do military press im fine when it goes up but then when i lower the weights for the next rep my shoulders pop... barely hurts but its still uncomfortable

it also does it when i swing my arms in a big backwards circle
im not gonna get it checked till it gets worse tho

Interesting, it nearly completely takes my shoulders out (perceivably).

As for military pressing, dont go too low ST240, you dont have to touch your nipples or anything like that, you may only want to go until your elbows are level.

The way some people at the gym I see avoid injury, is simply use less weight and train slower. Sure its an ego kill, but if you keep hurting yourself anyway whats the point. There is a guy at my gym that could lift much more, but benches with 365-385 for very slow reps, delt presses 245 for slow reps, and so on. He often will use very light weights, very slowly, no speed workouts for him. It obviously has kept him in the game because he is a pretty thick individual.

If that is what you have to do to keep from hurting yourself, it would be advised to try it out. I can only train heavy for so long, and faster for so long, before I have to pull back - so I cycle things in a way based on how I feel.

I hurt both rotator cuffs a year ago, as of right now do not do anything except for ice, rest and an anti-inflamatory (Advil), rest your shoulders for a few days and see if the pain starts to subside.

if after a few days you still have the same stabbing pain when you move your shoulders you may consider seeing a shoulder specialist to find out if any surgery is necessary.

Well it is sunday 3 days after it got hurt. I have been icing it alot and resting, not lifting anything. There is still some pain and soreness there but not as much as there was. Its kinda stiff, not sure if thats from the ice and not moving it a whole lot or what.

I have been lifting heavy for a while now and I guess it is time to lighten it up and add a few more reps.

Mudge I was following that guide to bench and thought it was odd that my shoulder was hurting because it never does when I do that, but maybe it is from my military press and going to low on it. I ussually go upper chest to mid neck level when doing them but maybe it was to low. I will concentrate on my elbows next time I do them and make sure I don't screw anything up.

I am going to see someone tomorrow at my gym and he is gonna check it out for me. I doubt it is a tare now because if it was that severe I think the pain would be much greater then it is. Thanks for all your help everyone and I'll let ya know what happens.

be careful...
I had the same sort of pain & ended up with a torn pec muscle...the muscle between the front delt & upper pec tore.
That was 8 years ago & it will never fully recover.
I am a powerlifter & this was a big blow.
Leave it alone for a few weeks....maybe low weight high reps just to try & strenghten the tendon.

mudge.... with regards to the slow lifting

if you use less weight with slower reps do you still get the same benefit compared to higher weights fast reps... say the "failure factor" is the same?

Whats up. I had a rotator cuff problem that took about 6 months to fully heal. I did exercises for them from this website and I think it helped. The best healer is time and avoidance of heavy push pull excercises.

FYI heres the website I used. http://familydoctor.org/265.xml

That could be argued till the cows come home. I would argue for the most part yes, but things like rows would place more strain on the biceps, and presses more on the triceps - fatigue wise. I primarily use slow reps when I feel I need to give my body a break, if my poundages are going down or I am actaully physically hurting I will make some temporary change along those lines.

It gives you excellent opportunity though to use your mind-muscle connection and "only" train those muscles intended.

The guy I pointed out in my gym though always goes slow, with everything, and he would eclipse probably everyone on this board in terms of hypertrophy.
