Hernia. How to avoid it ?

Now that I am lifting a lot heavier I wanna know how to avoid this thing called hernia. If you think that there is no reason to worry about it, just go to google and type hernia in the image search.

Just because you are lifting heavy does not mean that you are "safe" from getting hernia. You can do it with light weights, I have even seen peeople herinate disks doing something as simple as picking up a towel! I am really scared of it to but I don't think there is anyway to avoid it, it will either happen or it wont.

I heard that something protects your internal organs. Like a capsule and when it breaks, some organ comes out and this is called hernia. I think that it happens when you lift something light, like a towel, it is because you previously lifted something really heavy and it is what started the whole thing.

I am only speculating here.

Do situps. A hernia is a tear in the abdominal lining. The best prevention is situps, and to have a strong mid section. Also if you use a weight belt STOP. Go lighter untill you can support heavier weights on your own. Like P-Funk said though, there really is no telling. Some get them, some dont.

There are different kinds of hernia also. You can also herniate a disk in your spine.

There are two types of hernias, congenital and acquired.

Inguinal hernias and femoral hernias are congenital defects (You are born with the defect in the fascia , the lining around your abdominal cavities.) Heavy lifting with increased intrabdominal pressure brings it out. (Ie: you valsalva or strain against high intrabdominal pressure and thus "push' the intestines throught the fascial defect.) If you aren't born with the defect, all the lifting in the world won't give you a inguinal or femoral hernia...a bad back but no hernia.

Acquired hernias or non -congenital hernias are usually due to previous surgeries (incisional hernias) where they have cut throught the fascia and despite stitches, become inherently weak . Pregnancy can thin the fascia to the point where they rip in pregnant women. High doses of cortisone orally also thin the fascia and predispose people to hernias. Most of these types of hernias are direct abdominal hernias or above the inguinal canal, .
Strenghthening the abdominal muscles not only prevent these, but also "cure them" without surgery, so to speak. Ie: the rectus abdominal muscles become the replacement "mesh" over the defected facia. I have one of these and have always had to keep my abdominal muscles tight so that I can forgoe surgery. (I had the inguinal ones when I was young)


Umbilical hernias (around the bellybutton) is usually congenital but sometimes it is acquired. In pregnant women, that's the apex of greatest stretching force on the fascia when carrying a baby and a umbilical hernia can form as the belly gets bigger.

Of course, you don't know if you are congenitally predisposed so avoid any valsalva manuever when lifting (ie: use good breathing technique) and don't throw out your back in the meantime!

excellent post bandaid!

valsalva means holding your breath while straining.. in case you didnt know... this raises your intra abdominal pressure through the roof and can cause MANY problems (actually it is one of the reasons many people have heart attacks while straining on the toilet)

core strength trainins is excellent prevention as well.

herniated discs in the back are usually caused by bending over and twisting as there is a congenital weakness to the disc on the posterolateral aspect (in everyone), that is why sometimes something as light as a towel can give you a herniation...it isnt the object you are lifting as much as it is the MOTION you used to lift it.

use proper lifting technique and breathing technique and you should be ok.

I've had 2 hernia's in the past 10 years! One inguinal and one umbilical. But I was born with them, they just ripped more from lifting until I got surgery.

i am the hernia king. i have had 8 hernias....all by the age of 14. i am 34 now and don't plan on having any, anytime soon. keeping the midsection nice and firm definately helps things out. i don't want to talk about this matter anymore....it's making me queasy.

oh yeah...well i had 55 hernias!
just kidding of course...just thought it was funny that you guys were like "i had more than you did"...its kinda like when someone shows you a scar and then you show them one of yours and it goes back and forth.

neither one of you get any more hernias!
