it is true that if you are more skilled in BJJ you will be able to put your opponent in a hold faster in most cases....but you are still in a compromising position, especially if he has "friends" around.
also, short of choking him till he his unconciouss or breaking a limb...it is hard to get an opponent to submit...."tapping out" doesnt end a streetfight.....at least if you knock him out, or knock the wind out of him, or break his nose he is unable/unwilling to continue fighting. |

please dont get me wrong...you do need ground fighting skills just in case it heads that direction.....I just dont believe it is the "end-all-be-all" art that people seem to think it is because of the UFC competitions.
in all honesty, just knowing a few basic ground moves really well is enough IMO....they are relatively easy to use and apply and can be added to any style of martial arts....you may not be able to beat ken shamrock but your average pain in the ass drunk bastard doesnt stand a chance! |

I got the shit beat out of me when I took a fight to the ground. I took the guy down after he sucker punched me at a club (For what reason I have no idea) and threw in my legs (What you MMAers call a rear mount. I started pounding him in the back of the head repeatedly. By repeatedly I mean twice because within a second 4 of his friends played a game of soccer with my head. I really wished I would have been knocked out because they each got in like 3 kicks before the bouncers got to them. I got a broken nose and a chipped tooth out of the deal and got to feel each of their shoe laces scrape across my face. For some reason I never got a black eye, despite the focus on my face and head.

exactly what i mean Dale....unless you know for sure that this guy doesnt have friends around dont take him to the ground...it opens you up to becoming a human "soccer ball" like you said.
sometimes you dont have a choice in the matter...you may find yourself on the ground despite your best efforts no to go there...but if it were me i would try and get up again as soon as possible and remember to always monitor your surroundings, try to keep your back to a wall if possible so that you cant get jumped from the rear....street fighting is a hell of alot different than sport fighting...lots more to worry about, not to mention the fact that you can't "tap out" if you are getting your ass kicked! also when you are on the ground your opponent may gain access to a knife that they may keep hidden in their pocket or boot and you may never see him get it if you are wrestling around with him....but you will sure as hell feel it when he jams it between your ribs....i always carry a tactical folder when i go to clubs....wrestle with me on the ground and see what happens. |

well, the Lamborgini is in the shop...gas prices are high anyway....and for some reason, law enforcement officials tend to frown at people driving 180mph.....
so I will have to reluctantly decline.. ![]() |
