Wednesday morning I'm at the gym and start off with pull-ups. I do 1 set of 10 and then feel pain on the left side of the back of my neck. I did a couple of sets of pull-downs then called it a day because of the pain.
I iced for 15 minutes but it didn't help and I spent the afternoon and all night with a heating pad. The left side is swollen, theres constaint pain, and it hurts when I move my heat to the right, down, and up. I didn't hit anything and I didn't hear any pops, so what the hell do I do to myself? I want to give it a few days to settle down before calling the doc. Any ideas or similar experiences. |

Well it could be a number of things from a strain/sprain...to to a badly torn muscle.....hard to say without more info.
If the pain is only there during movement and it doesn't radiate (shoot to other areas)....then it is most likely muscular in nature and hopefully not too serious. try to look at it in the mirror or have someone inspect it for any knots that may indicate a torn muscle...if not then i would give it a few days of rest and ice and see what happens....if it is still very painful after 3-4 days, make an appt. with the doc....better to be safe than sorry.
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

i've had this happen to me several times, the last one due to a snowboard incident a couple months ago. it sucks, but if you just rest for a few days, it will probably go away. this is just from my own experience, never take serious medical advice from an internet discussion board.

Actually advice from a chiropractor is about just what you need. I could write a book about spine problem, and if I did, the first advice I would give people is go to a chiropractor. A lot of medical doctors dont like recomending them because they just might cure their patients and take away THEIR business. Ive been helped, and know many, many people who have been helped by Chiro DRs with back problems. And often when regular medicine has failed them. I would have been a lot better off staying with my Chrio DR. and avoiding surgeons.........take care........Rich

when I have this problem I have someone help FORCE the muscle to loosen up. Have them stand behind you and squeeze the Trapezius between the shoulder and neck and hold, this should be a hard squeeze and it will hurt at first but you will feel better. When squeezing use the palm of the hand and all 4 fore fingers.

Thanks for the advise. Its gotten a lot better since Friday. I think that it problem is in the left shoulder and the pain manifested itself in the neck/upper back area. I partially tore my rotator cuff back in 1990 and have pain almost every day. I may go see the doctor that did my right shoulder in 2002 and see what he says, but I really don't want to go back under the knife.
I think that it started because I've been benching again, once every couple of weeks. I guess that I have to accept that benching is out for good and deal with it. |
