Weight Lifting stunts growth?

Ok, before you all bash on me that this is a recognized myth. I must say that it is surely a myth for a reason. There's remarkable amount of evidence that weight lifting promots HGH which is good for growth yes, but that is exactly what closes your plates. So, as I see it, this might be good for 15-17 yr olds but not for 17-25 yr olds, who are still growing but will close their plates early just because of weight lifting. Weight lifting is just as important as height for me...so I'm having a hard time to decide what's true

Any thoughts?

A myth. Weight lifting by iteself does not stunt growth. If anabolic hormones are used before the growth plates fuse (epiphyseal plates) then yes . (That's why it is discouraged in men between age of puberty and about 22, women's epiphyseal plates fuse at a younger age, closer to 18)

I couldnt imagine a more positive life move for a young person then starting weight training. As the bandaid lady says this one is an old myth. Believe it or not back in the 60s weight training was even considered detrimental to playing sports by many coaches. Remember the salt pills too? If anything it makes you taller, at least keeps you so because as you age pumping iron strengthens your bones and ligaments.I started lifting when I was, like, 14yo or 15yo. Nowdays you wont be able to be competitive in sports without being on a weight regime. As the decades of your life go by strength training becomes even more important. I'll be puming iron until I croak, and hopefully after..................take care.............Rich

I don't think it has a huge impact on growth. I do think that if you lift extremely heavy at a very young age it does compact growth plates some. The guys in my class maxed on bench and squat for the first time at the end of sixth grade! The guys that are a year older than me started the same year, end of thier 7th grade year, are all taller than 90% of the guys in my class. There could be nothing to it, but seems logical.

Absolutely it can! You grow from your joints. Ask a doctor... It happens more than you realize. I was supposed to be 6'4 and I'm 5'11. They nailed my brother at 6'3 but he added an extra 1/2 inch. Got my older sister right as well. 5'9. Not sure how they know or if they even do but that's what I was told. Anyhow, yes lifting weights, especially intensly can slow or even stop your growth. Shouldn't really get into lifting until 16 and even better 18 years of age. Wish I would have waited. Maybe I'll still be this height and maybe not.

May the Lord Jesus Christ bless those who bless me as I gladly accept their blessings, and curse those who curse me all the while protecting me for any evils. In Christ name, amen...

rubbish...there is absolutely no science behind the ability for a Dr to predict a persons height. Dr's use statistical data which is far from an exact science...

BKC you assume you were gointg to be 6'4" tall. What do you have to offer to support that claim? Other family members are taller than you are, but that is normal in every family. There are millions of people out there much taller than their parents. Shit happpens. The trick is to keep lifting so you can out bench all those tall people in your family ...
