    Cracked Sternum?

The past few months my chest has really been bothering me. When I bench press it so uncomfortable. I never bounce the weight off my chest either. At one point I was doing sets with 315 now I do sets of 225 just trying to get through it. I took a month off, in which you lose everything, and it didn't help. If I try to to sleep on my stomach the pain in my chest sometimes takes the breathe out of me. It doesn't always occur either. I could be picking something up and that pain in the middle of my chest randomly kicks in and just drops me to my knees. It could possibly be in my shoulder as well.

I know it's probably time to see the doctor but I am afraid the conversation will go something like, hey Doc it hurts when I bench press, "well then don't bench press". Who wants to hear that. Anyhow, has anyone ever gone through this? If so, how did you get through it and long did it take. Also I am open for any and all advice. I really do appreciate the help.

See a doctor in sports medicine....they will look at it closely before saying "don't bench" like a regular doctor would for sure.

    sure its cracked?

You mentioned a cracked sternum...are you sure that is waht it is...it takes quite a bit of trauma to crack a sternum and if you didnt bounce the weight off your chest or hurt it any other way then it is probably something else.

just wondering if you know for sure that it is cracked?
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

When one door closes another door opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the ones which open for us.

DrChiro, using 'cracked' is probably a bit harsh. I am sure it's not. It's just that any type of chest workout along with military press and dips causing a lot of pain. There is almost a popping sound in the middle of my chest. It's very bizarre. I am not a bodybuilder by any means but I have lifted weights the past 15 years to keep in shape and I was seeking info/advice on the internet and this site appears to be very helpful...TrojanMan, seeking out a sports medicine doctor seems to be my best bet, thanks to you and DrChiro.

You may want to get your back checked, focusing on the thoracic vertebrae..

Nothing to worry about, it is probably a warning that heart attack will happen soon.

As Trojan said, see a doctor that is in sports medicine. Prepare the money though.
