Is Milk Thistle really effective?

I was wondering how effective milk thistle is, I have heard of a couple of people use it here. I have some liver damage and wondered if it really works?

It's only been shown to be liver protective in rats in terms of alcohol liver injury and no human clinical trials have been conducted that were substantial

The more common one is a report presented by Eagon and colleagues who used a rat model of alcohol-induced liver injury to further advance this literature. Rats fed 36% of their daily calories in alcohol were compared with rats fed an isocaloric but alcohol-free diet. Milk thistle was given in the diet of half of the animals. Histologic liver injury, both inflammatory and fibrotic, was ameliorated in the milk thistle-fed rats that had received the alcohol diet.

Long-term clinical trials using this compound vs placebo in chronic liver disease would be of great interest.
