    Cankers

Hi peeps, I haven't had a canker since I was a kid, now all of a sudden I've had three in the last week on the inside of my lower lip and they sting like crazy (one canker at a time- one goes away, another comes in a slightly different spot) I've gargled with salt water a gazillion times but nothing seems to help. Anybody have this problem where you just start getting them for seemingly no reason? Or maybe what kinds of foods can cause this?

    Thanks

Walnuts and Pecans are known to cause canker sores.

I get them and when I do I know a cold or something similar is looming around the corner, definately seems to be a pattern there for me with getting them and being run down.

You may have bit your lip or scraped it with some kind of sharp food. After that you probably kept sucking on it and messing with it and your teeth scraped a spot near it causing a new one to pop up near the old one.

I'd say just keep using the salt water until it heals. Also, you might want to use Listerine a couple times a day to kill any bacteria that might be there. If you want to ease discomfort, get some Oragel (it numbs the canker, but not your whole lip so you won't talk weird ).

Whats always helped me, is put some baking soda on a Q-tip, and dap the canker. It stings like hell at first, but in a day or two it goes away(apply couple times a day).

nice try, dont blame it on me buster My son woke up with a canker this morning so it's definately something we are eating or drinking... I wonder if diet coke/pepsi can cause them, for the first time I actually bought a case for home...we drank a lot...won't be bringing it into the house again

I would think pop could def' cause them. For me, I've traced it to vinegar, which i'm dumping on my tuna.

i'm a little late with this, but i just woke up and can't sleep, so of course I logged on to IM to hang out for a bit...

here's what I've read somewhere but can't remember where now... same as with the herpes simplex virus that cause oral herpes/cold sores on lips, etc... it could be related to the level of arginine you are ingesting in comparison to your levels of lysine, both of them are amino acids.

Look at your proteins, and at your grains, nuts etc. Oatmeal, chocolate, corn products and protein powders with high levels of arginine are SAID to throw off the balance of arg to lys in your system.

Of course, i can't remember where the heck I've read this, but I know i did... and I started supplementing with Lysine a while back with much success as my cold sore outbreaks have been fewer and far between since then. I know it's a canker and not a cold sore, but like I said, just a theory...

dammit... now i want to look it up again. will be back with a link or two when i find them.

    edit:

    ok here are some links.
