    Incredible Back Pain

For those who know me or follow my journal I've started powerlifting about 2 months ago. One a week I have my ME Squat/Dead day. Every single time, the day after to 2 days after my back is in AGONY. I can't bend over AT all, can't get comfortable, have trouble sleeping...etc. What would be some good things to do to get past this or is it just part of powerlifting? I've done moist heat, motrin and Flex-all creme...none of which seem to help too much. Any suggestions?
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain...

Hey, it sounds like DOMS. Delayed onset muscle soreness. I was dealing with it for a while cos I have been starting to run where I always rode the bike or something.
Stretching after workout even yoga beleive it or not could help if its DOMS. And if your pain is only really muscular what it means is you are getting stronger.

    Yes that is the question...

How much stretching are you doing?? - before, after, during?

After two months that just sounds like you have an injury. The pain cant be that intense unless you have hurt something or are about to by over training or improper form.

You might try a deep tissue massage to easy your pain.
I highly recommend all IronMagLabs supplements!

do some mobility training (active stretching) for your enitre body and make sure you are stretching after your workouts. A massage may help as well. Some sort of stretching daily, even on off days, may help you stay pain free also.

That is it exactly! When I started going to the Chiro for my shoulder I let him know about my back as well. Each session he spends about 10 minutes hurting the hell outta my lower back but the pain has gone away

I'll have to incorporate more stretching

If you have some money lying around I suggest yougo to your local bookstore (barnes and noble etc..) and pick up the Book "Core Performace" By Mark Verstegan (it is like $20 or less). There is a whole chaper with active stretches and mobility training with pidtures and explanations. Mark is an awesome strength Coach out in AZ and works with some of the top athletes of today. Mobility training basically helps you work to maintain joint intergrity and movement. Dave Tate wrote an article recently about his injuries and how he performs mobility training before each workout (as do I and a lot of the guys I know) and how it has helped him out. He talks about how he contaced Mark and Parisi for recomendations on this sort of thing. Check out the article on elitefts.com. I believe the name of it was "Just because you have a balckberry doesn't mean that you are moble" or something like that. Defenitly a good read. He tells the exercises that his mobility work entails like straight leg raises, leg overs, and scorpions all of which are detaile din "Core Performance".

I have told this tale before...

I was haveing severe back pain at the base of my spine a while ago

Went to a Chiro for two years, the condition never permanently improved -

My solution was to examine my training, and balance the volume and intensity
of training I was applying to my torso in every direction

In my case, this meant stepping up to ab work with much heavier resistance
like 40-50 pound crunches and such,
to counteract the multi hundred pound deadlifting I was doing

have not had a problem since...

If I do pull something, I have it pounded with deep tissue massage
and rest and heal, but there is never any ongoing pain -

Flexability work will usually keep my muscles from bunching tightly
around my spinal cord and drawing something out of alignment

A Chiro never helped me either. I just trained to build up my back muscles. The only problem I have now is that my neck is always tense and I am always cracking it. Not sure what to do about it.

I used to have really bad pain too, it turned out my actual frame was mis alighned. Check out the link and don't be fooled by the word chiro, its very very different than traditonal bone cracking chiro.
I am going to make a post about Nucca.

    Hope this helps

Great, thanks Patrick. Reading that article felt like he was talking about me. I'll definately pick up those reading materials!

you wont be disapointed. Also, ordering a foam roller form performbetter.com (like $8) to perform some self myo-facial release (SMF) will really really help! That along with mobility work, active stretching and static stretching and you will feel really good. I used to hate stretching. Now I take it seriously and I can really see and feel the benefit. I love it.
