More like 12-16 weeks after the operation.
hi
I went to the doctor yesterday about my shoulder and he says ive torn a rotator cuff and cant do weights for 6 weeks. What are your thoughts on this, is this true it needs 6 weeks to heal. What sort of size/strength and weight loss am I likely to have after 6 weeks off. Also should I stick to the bulking diet that Im currently on whilst not doing weights what about creatine, protein powder etc or is this just a waste and will I just get fat from a bulking diet whilst not doing weights. Anyone else had a similar injury, how long did it take you to heal.
thanks
Ps I very down about this major setback

dam that sucks man, i know how you feel.
maybe you could put a super leg program together, mostly squating, and some core workout stuff so your body still gets good work in. and if its your dominant arm thats hurt, you can work on the weaker arm to help it catch up while you rest the other.
rushing recovery is a sure fire way to a longer recovery, at least in my experience.
ive hurt both my shoulders permanently (distal clavicle osteolysis), as well as my right sternal clavicular joint. so some never really heal.
i think zinc, glucosamine, and chondroitin are good things to supplement for recovery.
Still Alive.
yeah, i would take more tha 6 weeks too.
Keep training your lower body and your other arm. Bench with it, press, pull etc.... Do everything you normally do. After about 8-10 weeks start very very light on the injured arm and work through a PAIN FREE range of motion. Just work on getting it strong through a good ROM, stretch and keep training the other arm to get whatever cross over effect you can. good luck.

hi
Thanks for the replys guys.
Unfortunately its my weaker arm/shoulder.
Foreman rules do you mean you had an operation and had 12-16 weeks recovery ?
I will do legs from next week on however im not sure about straight leg deads they may put pressure on the rotator a bit.
Anyway what about the diet should I continue my bulking diet whilst only doing leg weights or will I just get fat without the upper body work.
thanks

Don't do squats with a torn rotator though.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain...
well i have it time ago , i´.am a nurse i know when the problem is big.
most of the doctor use prevention, but all depent on how u fell.

Do not start with the bum arm until your Ortho gives you the nod!!!!
(Hopefully you went with a sports specialist)
I picked an aggresive young guy who had worked with some of the RedWings & Lions
to do legs I used leg press, seated leg curl, and extension machines...
(Check for ones with a stack and pin setup, this is easy one arm operation)
And if you can stand the pressure on the sore shoulder, use a hack squat with a stack and pin setup
Continue to work with the good arm - (Your abs will become strong)-
Get ready for some possible mental depression when the arm is strong enough to start lifting again... You won't be able to just do your old workout, and that's gonna suck-Make a strict plan of recovery before this happens
You may also want to concentrate on fine tuning your diet, if you can't concentrate so heavily on lifting -![]()

Well I have a torn cuff also. You expience pain and you'll know as your bench press will fall through the roof. Mine has dropped about 150 lbs in the last 3 months.

Tough old man how long did it take for your rotator to heel, you got any advice for me to make it heel quicker.
Rocco32 why cant you do squats ?
BTW ive been putting ice on in the morining and night and will start using heat soon as well.
Ummm...........if you dont let it heal properly you will make it worse and probably have to take off 6 months.Originally Posted by Oz lifter
Do as your Doctor says..............and NO weights at all for the entire 6 weeks.

Has your Ortho recommended physical therapy?
You should 'with permission' be raging, to start doing rotations
