    Back Pain?

I have had this chronic back pain for years now. It seems to come and go and when I re-injure it it seems to move around anywhere from my hip to my tail bone. Rob, I know you are going through some back issues......does this sound familiar? Right now the pain feels like it is right on my damn tail bone and I can't even tie my shoues.

yup, sounds like a disc, S1/L5 disc herniation possibly, it is very common, which is putting pressure on some nerves... like P-funk said, you need to see a doc and get an MRI asap.

until then, start taking ibuprofen (800mg 3 times per day with food) to help with the inflamation, ice it - 30 minute sessions every 2 hours, rest it, do not work-out, try not to bend over at all if possible.

if you do the above it should get better with time, but still see a doc and get the MRI that is very important. if it turns out to be a disc herniation the spinal epidural injections worked great for me, and there is no pain, they put you under.

There isn't any real fixes for this is there? I am just trying to justify NOt spending 1500 to get a MRI and have the doc tell me "yup you have a herniated disk" Then what?

i've been having the same prob w/ pain in the center of the lower back/tail bone area that travels into both hip joints and at times down to the outside of the knee. (the result of too much jump roping i believe) been going to the chiro for heat treatments/manipulations to loosen the lower spinal area ... wish i could say the pain is going away but its not, just feels better following the heat then comes back. i would start w/ moist heat 3x a day and a lot of stretching for the lower back/hams but as mentioned you should go to a specialist (you and me both) good luck.

When it come to your back, I wouldn't take any chances. The money is worth it, IMO.

    you don't have insurance?

you need to know the cause and an MRI is the ONLY way to know exactly what is going on in there. it's your back, if it is not important to you don't do anything.

there are a few things you can do for a herniation (if that is what it is):

    1. epidural injections
    2. spinal decompression therapy
    3. surgery (last resort)
    4. live with it

    I am doing 1 and 2.

chiro manipulations can make a herniation worse, and will not help.

heat is the worst thing you can do for inflamation, you should ice it.

stretching can make it worse as well, not too mention cause more pain.

I do have insurance so I guess that is a bad excuse. I am afraid that the doc is going to tell me to stop lifting weights..........I am not sure I am ready to give that up.

Yea, but would you rather become crippled several years down the road from not getting your back checked out and rehabbed if necessary?

Only if I was a big mutha fucka while I was crippled! The answer to your question is no, obviously there is so much more to life than lifting weights. Although I am not sure I have found it yet. If it doesn't get better I will see a doc.

it would be a good idea to stop training and rest for a week now. if it turns out to be a herniation you should stop training for 2-3 weeks and let it heal, after you "get better" you can resume training as long as you start out slow, be careful and avoid exercises like squats, deadlifts and anything that puts a lot of presuure and stress on your back. my choice to give up bodybuilding is not just becuse of my disc herniation, that was just my wake up call.

maybe it is not herniated, there is no way to know for sure without an MRI, but chiros always think that manipulation is the answer because that is all they do!

I am not saying that every back pain or problem is a herniated disc, but many people have buldging and herniated discs and don't even know it, they just live with the pain.

I believe that anyone with chronic back pain, especially if it is causing pain in your hip, leg, foot, etc. should get an MRI, period. if your chiro does not think so I would question their knowledge, intelligence and motives.

Wow! Everybody is getting back problems lately, my back just started bothering me 3 weeks ago and now I really fucked it up last weekend. The doc gave me some pain killers, muscle relaxants and prednisone. The muscle relaxants made it hurt worse and the prednisone makes me feel shitty. I'm going to use one of those electric stimulator devices instead and see how it works.

Had X-rays today. Sprained back is the diagnosis, going for therapy next Tuesday - Traction and Massage. Still need pain killers been off for 2 days now so the Ortho could get an accurate assessment of my situation and the pain is driving me nuts.

Went to Therapy yesterday and found out that the Ortho changed the diagnosis to possible torn disc....that sucks.
