    Conspiracy Theory

Is it possible that Lou Gerig's Disease/CJD, BSE, and Alzheimers are all the same thing?

They all have the same symptoms, and they are all slow wasting diseases of the brain, are degenerative, etc. Is it possible that Mad Cow disease has been prevelent in the population for a while, but gets diagnosed as Alzhiemers because it's not understood, or because there are certain organizations out there that don't want it to be known?

Not a bad question, D. If you came up with it, I'm impressed.

They share (except for ALS, Lou Gehrig Disease), a gene expression problem with amyloid protein. ALS is a little more complicated, demylinization of the spinal chord. BSE and CJD are related conditions.

Not a conspiracy, connectivity among result, with difference in cause.

Yeah, I thought the biological agent was called a "prion." I just see a conspiracy with the meat industry covering it up with alzhiemers disease.

Since I dont understand of medicine I cant say what is happening but not everything that has the same symptons is the same disease.

You could say it takes two to tango for certain diseases to express themselves in humans.

I think prion disease is one of them. Same with ALS and Alzhiemers .

I think there are protective mechanisms that are compromised by life-long history of chronic stress, puctuated with acute stress episodes. It silences genes that would otherwise do their job and keep homeostatis and protective systems functioning properly in the CNS and other tissues, like liver.

See, thats the central feature here. CNS gets attacked. because its chief dish and bottle washer protections are shut down, not being synthesized in liver correctly. That same situation has implications for a number of big name stress related diseases in other tissues as well - diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease.

The key to understanding this connection is that you need a combination of negative factors for to overcome the otherwise redundant protective systems in the body.

Modern life generates a lot of stress, and it and poor lifestyle choices are the factors that complicate gene expression, that sabotage protection systems. And then along comes one more factor - environmental, dietary, or pathogen.

There ya go. The antecepdant conditions for stress-catalyzed degenerative neurological disorders.

Not a conspiracy, but yeah, maybe cattleman downplaying the problems that cause this prion situation, certainly bad stock handling practices are part of it.

Always look beneath the surface of conspiracy theory, D. You'll usually find confounding factors at play.

    I'm still suspicious though.

You want fear, let me help you.

The largest biomass on earth is also the smallest, the kingdom of the microorganisms. They inhabit every surface except for those hot enough to boil water. They are found in the atomosphere, miles up, riding tiny particles. They are found in the deepest oceans, and in rock, two miles deep, yes - living in rock, cells that estimated to be thousands of years old, the tortoise variety of the microworld.

The first appeared on this planet billions of years ago, and have remained the dominant cause of what we call biogeochemical cycling, the turnover of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorous, iron, sulfur and numerous metals and minerals.

They are found in living in highly acid and alkaline environments, and can survive in a dormant state for very long periods of time. They have been recovered from surfaces of materials taken to the moon that were contaminated with them before being on the moon. That is one helluva survival skill. That shocked the very shit out of the environmental microbial science community when it was discovered more than a decade ago.

The pathogens are closely tuned to their niches (specialized habitats) and tend to stay with their hosts...until their host species are disturbed, become sick or few in number. And then they may go looking for a new host. Think about how many animal and plant species are lost each and every day...every hour, every few minutes. Thats opportunity knocking, that ticking you hear.

Now, if you look around you, what is become a very numberous animal in almost every environment on land? Hmmm. That would be man. We see unusual viral and bacterial isolates, even these prions, emerging from their native habitats in response to disturbance, environmental change....the destruction of war, desertification, environmental disasters, urbanization.

Worse, we have massive erosion in human health due to poor lifestyle practices. Lets make it really easy for them to set up shop in some cozy cellular surface inside.

The bugs are coming. The pandemic that will clean house, its a matter of time, not an if, an when.

This is fact; they have short lifetimes, in comparison to ours. With each generation, there are adaptations to needs.

Who turns over faster? The microbial hordes. Who will adapt to us as a new, preferred host? Our microbial ancestors or their viral relatives. Organisms that still roam the earth like minature dinosaurs, perfected long ago by evolution...

They will adapt to us as their nerw preferred food source and host.

Heaven help us; they adapt far faster than we can. The most recent generation of anti flu / anti virals, brought into use in 2002, were found to be useless earlier this year, just a few short years after their introduction.

In the end, the microbe kingdom will once again rule, and humans, here for but a blink of an eye in the clocktime of life on this planet, will be but a dusty memory, carbon unit prey who proved too fragile to sustain a longterm relationship with their tiny parasite conquerors.

    Feel better?

They found cyanobacteria in hot springs in Yellowstone. Fear the bacteria.
