About 2 months ago I started a new workout program. I do a lot of heavy lifting with squatts and deadlifts. the other day I woke up with a pain in my right shoulder blade. it doesn't hurt except when I lift weights or do certain stretches or press on it. so basically I have to refrain from any type of lifting now in the upper body which sucks!!! Ever heard of someone with this problem? Any recommendations as to what I should do? I've already kept off of it a week and it hasn't improved. I can't really tell if its muscle or bone related.
The pain is in the inside of my right shoulder blade close to the spine. a friend/trainer of mine said it could be lactid acid build up. Again, I don't feel the pain unless the muscle is being used.
Sounds like you have some localized damage to the nerve or connective tissue.
If you are using a lot of heavy deads (squats won't activate this injury as much as the deads, but you get some due to natural resistance mass stabilization and flexion of the shoulders/upper back), you are not allowing sufficient recovery time inbetween workouts. This is the most common early warning sign, along with general fatigue or difficulty sleeping. You've strained this tissue. Rethink your program. In the meantime, you might find a chiro or a physiotherapist who specializes in ART (active release therapy). Make sure you get a referral from satisfied patients; its a tricky art of deep nerve and muscle retraining (no pun intended), and a hack can do more damage than good.
If it continues to bother you despite easing up on your deads (which are very taxing to the CNS by the way), see your physician.
its happened to me before, i know exactly what your feeling. take time off and heal. i actually bruised my entire trap from squatting, not a good feeling at all. try some rotator cuff exercises, those helped me alot.
Also it look into shoulder impingements, always keep doing the rc exercises, I tore my rc and was found to have some bone spurs the rc exercises really helped.
