What to do about severe back pain?
I just started getting in the gym again after a years layoff, and my personal trainer got me to do some fairly intense weight-assisted chins the other day, now my back is in severe pain (can hardly walk, the breath gets knocked out of me)...im fairly sure its muscular because it subsides when i lay down...its in the middle of my back...does this seem normal after first starting back and being intense? whats the best thing to do? just wait it out?

sounds like a trap pull...
massage usually helps me, if you dont have access you can roll on a foam cylinder, or small med ball |

I get that every once in a while. All I can say to help you out is see a Chiroprachtor.

If I were to guess based on the fact that I haven't been in the gym for 6 months:

I agree it probably a series of overly stressed muscles. You have severe DOMS in one or more muscle groups in your midback. Massage would help, so would ice. read up on foam rollers, use one regularly.
I would talk to your trainer about this issue. He/She doesn't seem to understand the need for conditioning and use of an slowly progressive adaptation phase to avoid excess muscle group damage. I don't believe a chiropractor is needed for this injury, but Fletcher brings up a good point. You might consider seeing a chiro for skeletal alignment assessment. - just as you would go to a dentist for a check-up. An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure. |

You had a year~s~ layoff and a personal trainer put you on a "fairly intense weight-assisted chins" program?
Wait...weight-assisted...is this the pullup machine with the platform pushing your feet up? Or weight attached "assisting" the intensity? |

Ok. I was thinking about you doing pullups with weight added to you. I guess the weight on the machine was not right.
And dont sweat it, I took 12 advils today. ![]() |
