the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (t3) and thyroxine (t4) help to establish metabolic rate.
If someone is hypothyroid (low t3) then their optimal metabolic rate will be compromised.

T4 changes to to the metabolically active T3. If you are low in one wouldn't you be low in the other?

He ought to see his doctor about a perscription medication. I suffered from Hypothyroidism a few years back and my doc had me take 50 micrograms of synthroid once a day. After 6 months or so, it corrected itself.
I wish my lawn was emo so it would cut itself

Usually yes, if a person has a low T4, the person's T3 will also be low. However, a person can have a normal T4 and a low T3 if a person has problems converting T4 to T3.

There is a drug called Tapazole but it is for HYPERthyroidism. In other words it is given to a person who over produces thyroid hormones. If your friend has Graves Disease then he/she produces too much T4 & T3 and would tend to not be able to put on weight or would experience rapid weight loss without dieting. Tapazole would decrease the amount of thyroid hormones the body produces allowing a person to maintain a certain weight or put on weight. As for the type of diet for cutting for a person with Graves Disease who is on Tapazole...just eat clean.

A person with low t4 can have high t-3 because they lack cortisol to drive it into the cell. Adrenals and thyroid problems go hand and hand. Thyroid drives adrenals and vice versa. Alot of problems with thyroid is in ability to convert due to adrenal imbalances which is showing up more and more due to our high prressure society and not taking time out to enjoy life. Its go go go. Take some time out and examine your life style then make neccessary changes in order to help reduce stress on the body.

How is that different from what I said? hypothyroid would be low T3......you just said it yourself (a person can have normal T4 and still have low T3; or they can have low T4 which then would lead to lower T3).

I was trying to say that hypothyroidism is not based solely on T3. |

What I'm not getting is why a person who is taking meds for hyperthyroidism would ask about a cutting diet. Granted Graves Disease causes other problems inaddition to elevated thyroid levels, but heck if person with Graves Disease wanted to cut, just stop or decrease the Tapazole. |

You need to distquish ft3 from serum t3. You can have a high serum t3 but low ft3 and still experience hypothyroid symptoms. same wasy as you can have high testosterone, but low free test and feel like shit.

eitherway, the defenition of hypothyroid is low T3......if you have low testosterone, you would say "I have low testosterone"....not "I have low free testosterone...etc....".

It all comes down to bioavailability what is usable to the body. I have seen guys with 1000 ng/dl and low free and have symptoms of low testosterone and people with 500 ng/dl and high free testosterone are better off. Problem with drs not properly treating low testosterone
