I dont know if I should go on the anti-depression or not

I've been haveing bad stomach acid reflux for the past 9 months and it been extremely fustrating going to teh gym and not being able to do my all just kills me. My doctor gave me a anti-depression NOVO-Venlafaxine it seems to help a bit with the anxiety but I also noticed alot lower amount of sex drive. Can this cause problems in my overall gains in training?

not going to be related to gains in the gym, but might lead you to not having a healthy sex life.....I was on SSRI drugs for my anxiety/panic attacks...that stuff made my situation worse and to top it off the side effects were HORRIBLE....being a male in my mid 20's the last thing I need is to not be able to perform in bed....it got to the point I couldn't get it up....after stopping the drugs things were back to normal in no time.....I wouldn't take those drugs again if you paid me.

Thanks for the quick replie I only assumed because with low sex drive. That would mean your testorone levels are low, I only assumed because of this it would cause problems in the gym.

its a side effect of the drug...not related to low test levels.

I would recommend going back to your doctor, or failing that another. Mental state should be taken seriously and handled asap.
I love it when a plan comes together.

There are a shit ton of different medications for depression/anxiety out there. Have the doc try something else that gives similar results as far as dealing with the Dep/Anx, but might not give you the same side effects. i don't know if you are just seeing a medical doc, but i was told the best way to do this is to go to a Phycologist (spelling). The head doctors that can prescribe medications, they specialize in this stuff, not like a doctor who can give you this and something to take care of your sinus infection. I was told they would know the sides, effects, reactions, etc. better than any medical doc.

I would not just let it go and not take the meds if they are needed. I take mine religiously now because i noticed a major difference (and my wife would beat me if i stopped).

I was on Effexor for a while. I didnt really notice a decrease in sexual drive...but then again, I still had anxiety. I got off the pills and have dealt with my anxiety in a spiritual way. I am not prescribing this.

This girl I used to fuck had panic attacks once every 2 weeks. She is on the same stuff I was on and she loves it. She even stopped, abruptly, and had an attack right away. You kind of have to back off of it.

I think i was on Paxil right before the Effexor. That shit GAVE me panic attacks.

Paxil should be taken off the market. I think its an unsafe drug with more side effects then benefits. I made my anxiety/panic attacks a daily thing...I would grind my teeth and bounce my legs all day at work sitting at my desk....I was a wreck on that crap. I do not know anyone that had luck with that crap. It was also the worse drug I ever taken as far as sexual sides go.

YES!! I was on that for a little bit. Ill admit, I was nice as can be while on it, but I grinded my teeth all the time and I didn't even think about sex on it.

Yeah they (the doctors) look at Paxil and other SSRI drugs as a fix, not a bandaid. Yet they treat great drugs like Xanax like they are giving you crack. The doctors tell you its just covering up the problem....the way I see it if I have to take a drug for the rest of my life I want something with the least side effects, and most benefit.

These drugs might work for a select few, but doctors give them out like candy....tell the doc you are stressed at work...here have some paxil...someone died here have some paxil....you are poor and life is hard here have some paxil.....its like the cure all...like as accepted as taking a vitamin C daily. FUCK THAT!

DO are not psychiatrists and should not be despensing out anti depressants like peds candy because they are too fucken lazy to look into the biological causes or simple imbalances. get your hormones checked by DO into alterative medicine and not endocronologist. Endo's know diabetes they do not no shit about hormones and treat people by numbers rather then symptoms. Drs are also take a pill for this and see me in 4 weeks FUCK THAT.. look into lifestyle changes, sleeping patterns, and pin point exactly when it happened. Been down this road many times and if you are not satified then get a new dr. Anti depressant will lower testosterone and also posible cause liver problems because they alter liver detoxifcation pathways of cytochrome p 450. YES I AM FUCKEN BACK Reason you are getting acid refulx is because your bile acids are not releasing from the liver and ones that are are causing irritation to your intestinal track and causing the acids to be kicked up through the espohoagus. Its called GERD which can also be from low stomach acid as well as high. rexamine your life and make changes get to bed on time and if on computer late at night get off it before 8 pm and let your mind settle down and unwind. Your are probably sleeping like shit which is causing your cortisol levels to rise at night time and stay elevated during the day time causing depression why? Elevated cortisol cause tryptophan to be diverted from its serotonin pathway and to another metabolite. This how cortisol causes depression and controlling adrenals imbalances will relieve majority of depression and anxiety. Like i said drs are to fucken lazy to look at biolchemistry of things to understand reason why..

Don't forget that us lazy doctors are doing most of the research on this

The Role of Cortisol and Depression: Exploring New Opportunities for Treatments
by Paul Mackin, M.D., Ph.D., MRCPsych, and Allan H. Young, M.D., Ph.D., MRCPsych
Recent research suggests new strategy for treating depression

The idea that stress hormones may actually affect the brain's biochemistry and cause depression is an evolving concept," said Owen Wolkowitz, MD, UCSF professor of psychiatry, director of the UCSF Psychopharmacology Assessment Clinic, and co-author of the paper. "Recent studies have amassed enough evidence to suggest that at least some cases of depression may be a disease or disorder of the endocrine system which manifests itself in the brain rather than in the body."

The findings come from Adriana Feder, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry in medicine at Columbia University, and colleagues

TO BE HONEST, I DON'T SEE THE NATUROPATHS DOING THE SAME QUALITY OF RESEARCH THE MDS ARE DOING EVEN THOUGH THEY REFERENCE OUR WORK ALL THE TIME.
