Chiropractors

I have been having some problems with my left trapezius. It knots up and burns whenever I drive for a while or sit at my computer. I was referred to a chiropractor by my primary doctor. I have never been to a chiropractor before. He checked me out and took some x-rays. He did this one test where you stand on two scales. One foot on each scale and stand in front of a mirror. My left side was carrying 10 more lbs then my right side. We also could see that my left side was up higher then my right side. He suggests that I come in for readjustments. What are your opinions on chriropractors? I don't want to have to start going to there for readjustments the rest of my life. Are they helpful? Comments... Thanks.

I think as long as you don't let the chiropractor do anything to your lower back you are fine. I have had back problems most of my life . A chiropractor tried to adjust my lower back after a football injury and the guy fucked me up for almost 3 months. I now know that the problem was related to posture, and weight training plus always being mindful of my posture has helped me more than anything. I'll never let a chiropractor touch me again.

Same here. I saw one when I didn't really have anything wrong with me. She was a friend of the family and she said "Everyone needs an adjustment at some point." So I went to see her, she felt this, looked at that, adjusted this, blah, blah, blah. She said she was just going to loosen me up a bit and do a few things she always does. Well after that visit, I couldn't move my fucking neck for 3 days. Then she had the nerve to tell me to come back so she can fix me. Fuck you lady, and fuck chiropractors.

Well shit. Mixed reviews. I don't want to have my neck messed up. I already payed this guy 70$ for my visit and x-rays. Its 20$ a visit. That is my co-pay. Now your telling me he could screw my neck up. I don't know what to do.

Don't listen to me, I hold grudges. At 20 bucks its not even a gamble. I say do it until your neck starts hurting.

Well.....hum isnt there some sort of specialist you can see? Really my chiro dont mess with my neck. He checks it to see if its straight. But other than that your spine may need realigned? It is a tough decision. I go now and then, but never really feel like I should go.

Actually, I went there with no problems and left with neck problems.

Ah that was years ago. My only experience with a chiro. I know I'll need to see one some day though and my tune will change....

getting adjusted is a band aid to the problem. Why are you out of alignment in the first place is the real question.

Go to the chiro (if you can find an ethical one) and get the adjustment and then do the proper strengthening and flexibility exercises to maintain the proper spinal position. If you just go and get "re-set" and then don't do anything about it, you will be going to get "re-set" in a few weeks again, etc.....

Just like massage or ART. They take care of the hypertonic tissue. If you don't prevent that tissue from becoming hypertonic again....you will have to keep on going for treatment.

Best thing to do might be to find an exercise based physical therapist.

MedX!

could be. depends on the type of therapist he is and what he does. Some are very manual. Some are very exercise based. Others are in the middle.

There is Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where Shirley Sahrmann teaches physical therapy. She is pretty much the bomb when it comes to exercise based physical therapy.

If you are going to be working in that setting (or with anyone really) I highly suggest purchasing her book "Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndromes"......you will learn a ton about exercises to correct problems with people and how to really loook at movement, etc....amazing book.

Thanks for the name drop. I actually went to college right down the road from her. I went to Maryville U. Wash U was my second choice. But the money it costs to go there sent me the other way!

What did you study? What were you going to study at Washington U?

I would definetly get the book though. If you can, try and sit in on one of her lectures too.

Chiropractors are like any other pseudo-science: there will be a few good ones, most will suck shit, and some will even hurt you.

After re-reading it, I may have lost myself.

I studied history at MU and didnt like it. And I think I burnt myself out on it, because I dont want to discuss history ever again! Better?

I just got back from being "adjusted" as they put it in the office there. He had me watch him adjust this Dad and his two kids first so I could get an idea of how he does it. I gotta say it felt really good and I feel great right now. He said I will probably be a little sore tomorrow kinda like after lifting. I will give it a whirl for a while and hopefully it will help my neck.
