I'm only talking me here but.... I've had the same trouble and then some. I NEVER go past 90 degrees and work up to heavy slow. I've found that working out has eliminated random knee pain that I've had as well. My muscles far out power my knees in my mind so that's how I approach it. Works for me and when it doesn't I'll get proper tests. So far I'm seeing great improvements and gains with no trouble.

Overall, if I feel any joint or back discomfort I listen to my body. Fact of the matter is I work up in weight with lower reps as a rule to be safe on most of my movements. Legs and core I use high reps to test the waters as well as working up in weight every time . I don't over train but you would think I do if you watched me, when I feel no pain the sky is the limit as I work up in weight. I don't see other people working out like me but, hey I love it. : ) Sore muscles are rarely a problem and sore joints see only improvement. Working out is the best thing I've ever done for my trouble spots.

could be a ton of things. stuff like "my knees hurt and crack when I squat" is terribly vague. You need to find a doctor or physical therapist that can evalute you.

I am curious to see what your squat technique looks like and to test your hip strength and watch your postural alignment.

After going through the posts of all the others I am now assured that this problem has got to be related with an old injury. I am facing the same problem of late and the doctor who was attending the same repeatedly asked me if I can recollect of an injury that I got in the place, though I could not remember it maybe it was something which I encountered when I was a kid. As my parents are not there anymore I just want to ask can childhood injuries also cause this problem?

i'm an ex-gymnast and i have the same issue. i've seen an orthopedic doc and he said its just the wear and tear on the cartilage my knees from all the tumbling and torture i put my body thru when i was a teenager. he told me he wouldn't be suprised if i had to have knee replacement surgery in my lifetime due to it.

My knees have cracked all my life. I've heard theories from snapping ligaments to synovial fluid gases making popping noises when released. Funny thing is, it almost never happens when squatting (go figure). The most torsion my knees ever experienced was from water-skiing when I was young but never an injury from that activity.

As long as there isn't pain associated with it, it isn't much to get excited about but you could still inquire with a doc or PT just to make sure.
