Just how bad are cigarettes?
BODYBUILDING SUPPLEMENTS High Quality Supplements For Bodybuilders and Athletes. www.ironmaglabs.com I have never had a sober cigarette in my life and I don't plan to. Infact, I still hold my breath when I walk by people who are smoking because I just can't stand the smell... Unless I'm drunk.
With that said, I probably have on average about 2-3 cigarettes per week in a social setting. I started doing this last year after my then most recent arrest because it gave me 10 minutes to chill out, rethink my game plan for the night, collect my thoughts, etc. because before that I was just out of control drinking non-stop. I don't think it's necessarily become a problem, but is this something I should be worried about down the road? I mean, there are people in this world who smoke multiple packs per day and live completely healthy lives, can 2-3 per week really hurt me that much? |

I started smoking two packs a day to deal with anxiety. After years of smoking it occurred to me that I have no less anxiety after a cigarette now than I had years ago before ever smoking.
Cigarettes destroyed my cardiovascular system. They cost me $1,600 a year. They made my car, cloths, and breath smell bad. I also have burn marks in my car. Going without a cigarette for more than 3 hours is hell! Quiting cigarettes was the hardest fucking thing I ever did. Now consider that while I explain that I was a Meth, Ecstasy, Coke, Pot, ect user. I smoked Meth for nearly a year. When I decided I didn't want to do it anymore, I was able to quit without much any trouble, but I could not not smoking cigarettes. I hate tobacco. It is a plague leashed upon man. |

I will smoke a cigar occasionally, a few times a year. The one occurrence when someone was walking behind me I asked if I was bothering them. But back to your deal. A few cigarettes isn't a big deal relatively. But you must be able to assume full responsibility and realize that you may start to want to smoke more. |

I smoke when I'm drinking also. I never have any during the week while I'm at work or on work nights. I go out boozing about once a week and I'll smoke 8 - 10 cigs that night. I think cigs are gross when I'm not drinking. I've been doing this for 6 years now. I feel the effects the next day. Usually a combination of the cigs and the booze. I don't get drunk as much as I used to though.

I'm not a big fan of smoking pot, but cigarettes are a completely different animal.
Not because it's a "drug". The problem is all the chemicals that the smoking companies put into it. Not the least of which are the chemicals that make it more addicting. If you have an addictive personality, it's even worse. I have a saying when it comes to flirting with a woman other than your own and I think it applies to this situation as well: If you go to the barber shop often enough, you're going to get your hair cut. |

Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

I just recently quit smoking, like you said sox it is a horrible habit. The hardest thing Ive ever had to do. 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 a week might not do much to you, but like others have said that could lead to 10, to 1 pack to 2 packs a day. Think of it this way, which I just did and realized it was worth quitting: Family Gym Membership around $1089.00 per year, Smoking costs Around 1300.00-1500.00 per year depending on how many packs a day you smoke. Not smoking is definetly better for your health and your wallet. I havent had a cigarette since 2/11/08 and plan on being smoke free for the rest of my life. Thanks to Commit....

Can someone explain to me why people smoke "when they drink?"
Ive had a parent that smoked, my friends always smoked, I use to drink with them while they smoked (cigs were allowed inside restuarants in FL at one time), and I never said "fuck it, let me have one." There are other embarrassing choices to make while drinking. Some that actually have some positives.. |

It's the legacy of being an ex-smoker. Alcohol and nicotine go really well together, only a smoker/ ex-smoker would know this, hence why non-smokers don't get it.
I used to smoke a few years back, not really heavily - about a pack every 2 days, but it was constant. I have no cravings for it sober, but after 2 or 3 beers a strange thing happens. I would love a cigarrette. Out of nowhere comes this feeling, made so much stronger when others are smoking nearby. When sober, I would try to get away from the smoke, finding it disgusting, but pissed.......give me a cig. |

I kind of understand. Heroin is great, but I never want to try it cuz I could get addicted.
I know Heroin doesnt equal cigarettes, but the behavior is similar. |

well for me smoking is like lifting. if i didnt lift wieghts i would probaly kill some fuckin people lol. but really i am in the gym alot to deal with stress. i smoke maybee 5-8 cigs a day. quitn is hard smoking provides a release from stress. you have to go outside to do it. well at least for me any way. it really does seem when you drink thats when you notice you are addicted, for me peoples hand gestures remind me of smoking. then you smell it on some one it stinks but you gotta have a cigg wierd but thats how it is for me.

I'm currently watching my dad deteriorate to the point where he can't even make a cup of tea without bending over and gasping for air. He has emphysematic COPD caused entirely by smoking and he's actually lucky that he doesn't have cancer. If by "lucky" they mean that he can barely eat, is barely able to shuffle more than a few feet at a time without getting out of breath, can hardly speak more than a few words without running out of air, usually ends up sleeping downstairs because he can't get up them, needs help in and out of the bath because he doesn't have the energy to do it himself and spends practically all day every day sitting on his butt feeling sorry for himself. Worst part of it is that he's only 58. I'm an ex-smoker and I stopped 8 years ago because I found out exactly what it was doing to me and my kids needed me more than I needed cigarettes. It's not "as bad" as they sometimes think, it's far, far worse. Just remember that it's not in the next few years that your habits catch up with you, it's decades from now. Sorry to jump in on this, but it's something that's a pet hate of mine. I haven't read the rest of the thread either, so I could just be reiterating what someone else has already said. ![]() |
