sodium excretion

Quick question -

By liquid volume, is there a difference in the amount of sodium that is excreted between urine and sweat? If so, is it significant?

Not sure about sweat but urine sodium levels will fluctuate depending on the water/electrolyte balance of your body at any given time. The Descending convoluted tubule, if i remember correctly, is the one that is responsible for absorption of Na+ back into the body. Depending on what your body needs at specific times of the day (as it relates to fluid osmolarity) the nephrons will accomplish by eliminating/absorbing more/less from the urine (one of the ways your body keeps a strict homeostasis of fluids/electrolytes).

Sweat, i would assume, but don't quote me on it, would probably work the same way.

I'm familiar of how the renal system regulates sodium levels(my memory of A&P is fading. I never remember going too in depth about the body's cooling mechanisms but I'm sure if we did it would be covered)) but just for the sake of simplicity, say someone has a given amount of sodium and is fasting and not undergoing any sort of exercise. I wonder what would yield more sodium, sweat or urine.

My first thought was sweat because I thought the apparent salty taste would be a good indicator it had alot of sodium in it...but then I figured urine could be the same way and I'm not willing to test that out.

Trying to figure this out next time I cut weight for a competition. Couple days before I get monitor sodium and water intake/excretion neurotically. Less guess work the better.

Lol, tasting urine is probably not the best choice. I wouldn't really know off the top of my head and a google search doesn't reveal much. It might be too difficult of a question to really answer. If you do get it, post up the source, i'd like to take a look cause now i'm curious.

You don't want to taste test your urine? Doesn't everyone taste test their pee?
