What is heat and cold therapy?

Hey friends can someone tell me what is heat and cold therapy. My father is suffering from a severe back pain and is really very depressed due to that. Someone told me to give him the heat and cold therapy which will help him in getting recovered soon from this problem of back pain. I really don’t know what is it and how does it work so please give me your suggestions on it.

Hot (heat pack) and Cold (Ice pack) therapies, referred to as hydrotherapy, can be used for different reasons when treating an injury.

Ice is great for decreasing inflammation to an injured by causing vasoconstriction and decreasing blood flow to that area. It also has analgesic properties as well.

heat can be great for increasing blood flow to an area which works well for really tight or ischemic tissue that has limited flow.

Then, you can use contrast hydrotherapy and move back and forther between the cold and the heat and different intervals to try and get a pumping action of the blood to the injured area. This can also be very effective.

However, you must determine what your fathers back problem is, so that you can determine the best way to treat the situation. Don't just go into things blindly.
