sprained LCL?
During my deck hockey game last night (organized street hockey...you run), my knee gave out. I felt a pop and I collapsed in pain immediately. It felt like someone gave me a two handed slash to the knee, but there was no one near me. A really weird and painful feeling.
I went to the ER last night and the PA gave it a sprained lateral collateral ligament diagnosis after a physical exam (no xray or mri). I wouldn't think a sprain would involve a "pop" and this kind of pain. My knee hurts like hell today and I can not put any weight on it. He told me to give it a couple of days and if it doesn't feel any better to see a orthopedic specialist. I'm going to do that ASAP instead. Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone sprained their LCL and what it felt like. Like I said, this feels like more than a sprain. Damn, I had registered for a half marathon in May. ![]() |

if you sprained it enough, you could have some tearing of the muscle tissue. also, depending on how your you sprained it, there could be meniscus involvement.
it is tough to diagnose right after the incident because the muscles are splinting so much do to the trauma, so you need to wait for the muscle spasms, inflammation and edema to go down before they can manipulate the leg and determine the extent of the damage.

I sprained my LCL playing playing basketball some years back, and boy the pain was excruciating. I wasn't able to put full weight on it for about a month.
But, I didn't hear a pop, you may have some other damage to your knee as well. I would have to agree with P-Funk, and think you might have injured the Maniscus also. I hope it was just a sprain though.

Let me guess, you tried to make a cut and your foot stayed planted, huh? Well, all the best to ya, and wish you a speedy recovery.

Ouch that sucks. Surprised they don't wait a while for the inflammation to go down.

I actually had to get an ultrasound on my calf today too. The doc was concerned with its swelling and wanted to check for a blood cot. Fortunately that was negative. Thanks for the positive vibes, hombres. |

Just the ACL?
That is better then both. ACL is a tough one.

They said the MRI was negative on the LCL, but they'll know for sure when they operate.
My knee is still all sorts of swollen. They said not to worry...it's just pools of blood in the knee. |
