    Question logging in

I'm having trouble viewing the forums unless I log in. When I'm not logged in, a screen pops up stating that "I do not have permission to access this page."

Any thoughts as to how I can remedy this problem would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Ah, that's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure.

    Thanks for the clarification.

    Question new dilemma

When I visit the main page (books, forums, articles, etc) and click on a link, any link under the main menu, like the Q & A Column, I am sent right to Tom Venuto's BFFM ad.

    What's going on there?

And what does that mean for those of us who are not computer savvy?

    Just curious, still learning here.

I am using mod_rewrite and all of the re-write rules are contained in the .htaccess file, if it is deleted or corrupted it does not know what the links are supposed to be re-written to.

    @ Robert DiMaggio

If a member needs to be registered and logged in now, what happens to all the guests who are viewing the board?

For example: Currently Active Users: 816 (83 members and 733 guests)

Is there a different means of access for these guests? How can they be an "active" user if they aren't registered?

Not forcing the issue, just trying to make sense of things.

I seem to be missing a lot here.

Rob's tactic encourages people to be members, they trade their info for some of his. Lurkers are less valuable to Webmasters.

    Sounds fair to me.

If you look through the guests in detail you'll see many of them are actually search engine spiders, particularly the Yahoo! Slurp Spider, which aggressively indexes webservers.

Those guests who are human can still see the forum index pages, however, they can't open threads or post.

right, it gives me a connection so to speak, many people visit a website and never return, if they register I am able to contact them via an email and get them to come back.
