This morning while working out I started to feel my back muscle start to seize up. Since this has happened to me before I recognize what was coming and I stopped immediately. I was just about finished with my workout anyway.

I thought I got away with it but tonight while "talking on the phone" it seized-up. The pain is so incredibility intense at first that I can't inhale or exhale.

The first time I ever experienced this was playing basketball and had my feet taken out from underneath me and fell flat on my back. I had to crawl to get anywhere. I was a teenager then but the same type of pain/injury has ocurred probably 3-4 more times since (I'm 49 now)

The pain is hard to explain as it seems to be muscle starting below my shoulder blades and running downwards but doesn't hurt on the outside, more like next to my spline on each side.

Is anyone familiar with this type of pain/injury?

I tried the chiropractor last time but as long as it took to heal I'm guessing it might have healed on it's own.

eat a banana...maybe you are prone to cramping.

It sounds like something I had not too long ago, when I had worked on my back on a monday and went to karate training on tuesday and me and the seniors went on the bag for a while. I think I just strained the muscle. I couldn't laugh, sneeze, had difficulty breathing without pain for 2 days but it just went after that.

If you can sit up without any pain then it's either a rib not moving correctly and the muscles around it being tighter - this will cause the pain if you bend slightly forward and take a deep breath in. Certain movements - especially twisting - will jam the rib head and make the pain worse.

But if it's alot of pain constantly even without movement, and you're having other weird symptoms like shortness of breath I would check it out with your doctor. It could be something much more serious.

maybe drink ample amounts of water?

as a side note I get that when I work back too hard...its sore and muscles are tight as hell for a few days...gets better just in time to do it all again.

Try light stretching exercises before any workout
and drink more and more water to maintain balanced water and minerals level in your body ....
