Hello all,

What do you think of the over the counter neurobuilders/brain function boosters available in nutrition shops and pharmacies..

Are they any good?

Which ones in particular? What is your goal?

I honestly do not have a specific supplement in mind..

My general goals are:
- Eliminate brain fog.
- ATTENTION AND FOCUS
- Promote neuro transmitter health.
- Help the body build new brain cells.

I find a healthy diet and outdoor activities to be very helpful.. (just came from a 3 hour walk in the woods

Now I just need something to boost my brain a little bit

You will not build new brain cells, however, some things that will help you in this area are to drink more water, fish oil, ALA, green tea, gingko biloba, ginseng, and Im sure there are a few others that I am leaving out. I would just search some of those online and look through the ingredient profile, then search the function of any questionable ingredients. Yes they will work to some degree, but like I said, they will not make your brain cells increase in number.

Last time I went to vitamin world, the lady there offered me a bottle of some mind enhancer pills.. I don't remember the name but I remember -the claim- that it helps build more neuro networks.. I do not remember the name of that enhancer but I'm generally interested in anything like that..

Anyone ever tried Everlast FOCUS ?

i dont have much thrust in the products you are referring to.

i think water, water and electrolytes & water is key. oily fish like salmon (because of their omega 3?).

for a mental contest like an exam, a boost of caffeine and raffined sugars half an hour before the start (and throughout if the contest is long) should also help. raffined sugars like low quality chocolate, bownies and pepsi.

however on the long run, these raffined sugars will destroy your brain function. long run caffeine effect isnt so clear. i personally think that on & off caffeine pills is a bad habit, partly because it will dehydrate you. but drinking a coffee every morning is probably fine.

mental pushups like playing chess, go, sudoku, doing mental problems or brain teasers, etc is bery helpful.

if you have tried all that and is ready for the next step, you could try adderall

A sufficient amount of sleep each night will benefit you more than over priced supplements that they'll try to push on you at the store.

Go out and buy a book called "The Brain That Changes Itself" by Dr. Norman Doidge. Read it to get a decent understanding of the latest neuroscience advances and understanding of neuroplasticity. Neurons do regenerate, the brain does not have to degenerate into mush as we age, but just as with physical exercise you need mental exercise. This area is still fairly new and advances are made all the time, unfortunately there is no agreed upon routine (so to speak) for brain health except that your brain adapts to different stimuli. Read, vary your subjects, increase your knowledge, turn off the TV, pick up books, do research, play games that stimulate the mind (as a poster above has stated). Think of the brain as a muscle that needs training, after a while our bodies become accustomed to a certain amount of training and we switch things up. Your brain works in the same way, switch things up, challenge your brain constantly and make it adapt to novel stimuli.

There is a tremendous amount of fascinating research going on right now and our understanding of neuroscience is really taking off. A google search will get you on your way re; brain plasticity, lots of authors you can look up, Norman Doidge, VS Ramachandran, Oliver Sacks, Paul Bach y Rita, Merzenich are a few of the pioneers/leaders in the field.

Muscles don't come in a bottle and neither do any of the characteristics of intelligence. Anything that is worth anything, takes work to achieve.

I dont generally use these products and also suggest that even you dont use it in any case they wont increase the number of brain cells so no point taking these.....

Why are you even suggesting that I don't use it?

How do you know "they" won't increase the number of brain cells?

Why is there no point in taking "these"?

Actually I did just read a new study out that says that part of the brain does regenerate...Im thinking the hypothalamus?
