Cards interested in free-agent Smoltz

Veteran released by Red Sox after refusing assignment

By Matthew Leach / MLB.com
LOS ANGELES -- The Cardinals maintain an interest in veteran right-hander John Smoltz, who was released by the Red Sox on Monday. Smoltz is a free agent and can sign with any Major League team. He had been designated for assignment by Boston, and declined a Minor League assignment. "I know that he's one of the guys we've been looking into," manager Tony La Russa said. "He's healthy, and when he's healthy, he's a weapon."
Smoltz was starting for Boston, but it's more likely that he'd fit as a reliever for the Cardinals, who have some question marks from the right side in front of closer Ryan Franklin. Pitching coach Dave Duncan acknowledged that the likely Hall of Famer holds some interest, but that there's some question as to the night-to-night resiliency of his arm.
La Russa said he had not placed a call directly to Smoltz to lobby the veteran but didn't rule out a selling job if it was needed.
"I'll do whatever I'm asked to do," he said. "I think it's enough to say that we've got interest, and we have since the day he was designated. I know Mo's [general manager John Mozeliak] been looking."
As for another free-agent relief option, Duncan expressed little enthusiasm for Justin Speier, who was recently released by the Angels.

I just heard we got him. I think he could be a good setup guy, that is if he can get and stay healthy.....

Posted by: I Are Baboon

Good luck in the Lesser League, John Smoltz. Sorry you couldn't cut it in the ass kicking AL East.

Posted by: min0 lee

He should do better there at middle relief.

Why is the baboon bitter?

I ain't bitter. I wish him well. But the fact is, old pitchers trying to make a comeback ought to go to the NL. Brad Penny is barely hanging on.

Posted by: Double D

This is true. Besides he went to a team with some new offensive weapons.....so he doesnt have to pitch to those guys!

Any pitcher is happy when he doesn't have to pitch to Albert Pujols.

Posted by: soxmuscle

Smoltz is an AL East casualty who was simply overmatched.

he'll be good for the Cardinals I would imagine.

Sitting on No. 9,999*

By Joe Strauss
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

SAN DIEGO — Depending on whose count you trust, the Cardinals tonight have the opportunity to become the fourth major-league franchise to reach 10,000 wins. All they need to do is dispose of the San Diego Padres behind starting pitcher Kyle Lohse and a lineup that has squeezed three wins despite scoring 14 runs total in its last four games.
The Cardinals do not formally recognize the St. Louis Browns and Brown Stockings teams from 1882-1891 as part of their history since those teams were not members of the National League. However, if those teams are included, the Cardinals and their lineage have won 9,999 games dating to 1882. The Cardinals formally designate 1892 as their founding date and held a centennial celebration in 1992. If the pre-1892 Browns/Brown Stockings are included, the Cardinals would join the Giants (10,322), Cubs (10,143) and Dodgers (10,032) as members of the select club.

Posted by: Double D

And they won last night. Those lovable Cubs and their poor fans are 8 back now......ouch!

Smoltz terrific in Cards debut
By BERNIE WILSON
AP Sports Writer

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- John Smoltz had a brilliant debut with the St. Louis Cardinals, striking out a season-high nine - including seven straight - and holding San Diego to three hits over five scoreless innings in a 5-2 victory Sunday.
Smoltz also had a bunt single and scored the first run for the NL Central-leading Cardinals, who retained their eight-game lead over the Chicago Cubs. He didn't walk a batter.

The Red Sox could use someone like that.

Well he was pitching against San Diego who are number 30 out of 31 teams in runs scored!

Posted by: min0 lee

What's up with those uniforms?

Posted by: Double D

I didnt see them, why?

Posted by: min0 lee

It just doesn't look right.

Posted by: IainDaniel

They have had them the last few years as a 3rd Jersey.

Posted by: Double D

Ya I dont care for them either. So World Series:

Cards Vs. Yankees?

Cards own the Dodgers, but the Rockies are looking very good right now. However with the pickup of Smoltz, that could be a serious 1,2,3 punch!

Wainright with 14 wins, Carpenter with 14 wins, plus he leads in era. Thats sick!

Posted by: IainDaniel

Cards and Phillies are the two teams in the National league. They both have a pitching rotation that can compete.

How about those Rockies, they were 15.5 back when they fired there manager, now they are 3.5.

Posted by: Double D

Ya I forgot they got Cliff Lee, wow hes been awesome!

I don't remember but Boston seems to come up with people.
I don't think trading Matterson was a good idea, Martinez is good but you never have enough pitching.
Boston's pitching was thought to be the best but with the injuries and a couple of disappointments and all the runs they have been giving away lately I doubt it.

Some babseball writers are counting Boston out of the race....yeah right.
These guys are proven winners.
This is also coming from the Boston writers might I add, not just the Post.

They probably could have gotten him for one pitching prospect and one hitting prospect, e.g. Justin Masterson and Lars Anderson. Nobody realized the Cliff Lee asking price would be so low.

It's their nature to hit the panic button at the first sign of trouble.

Most fans are still on board, but most fans realize this Red Sox team probably won't make it to the World Series.

You never know, you yourself have seen miracles happen before your eyes (2004- 2007)

The Yanks came back from nowhere to beat Boston 1979 and the Mets choked with a huge lead at about this time.

I think the Angels will get there, if the Yanks were to go head to head with the Angels they may not make it.
I notice that teams that can both hit and run they seem to beat the Yanks.

Posted by: min0 lee

Could it be the catchers fault...

Whats wrong with the Red Sox thread for this nonsense?

Pure gold. I look forward to bumping this quote come October.

Sounds good to me. I actually like the Sox much more than the Yanks, but hey its hard to like either team whenever reporters only care to cover the same 2 teams all the time.

The only place they pull good ratings are in the the northeast. ie Boston and New York.

Other then that the ratings are on par with everything else.

Its due to imbreeding.....

Posted by: Double D

Wainright 15-7. 2.50era now. And the Cards win yet again.

Posted by: Double D

And we just keep on rolling......

Posted by: min0 lee

Phillies...Cards...Dodgers....hmmmm...

Posted by: Double D

We have handled the Dodgers well this year. I am concerned with the Phils though.

The playoffs are a different beast, I remember when the A's won all of the regular season games only to lose in the playoffs.

The Phils are the team to beat in the National league.... just my opinion.

Posted by: Double D

Thats alot of opinions out there. And I think they will be tough.

We got:

Carpenter
Wainright
Smoltz (Who is a postseason stud)
Pineiro (Who has been pitching awesome)

The X-Factor is the best hitter in baseball Albert Puljos.

But as we all know all it takes is to get into the playoffs. Look at the Cards a few years ago. They didnt win crap in the regualr season, squeaked out the wild card, then killed Detroit in the series. Go figure.

Malley, still confident about the Cards?

Posted by: Double D

Well ya. Its just a loss, they just need to hit with runners in scoring position. Pretty bad time to go cold though.

Posted by: Double D

WOW! For shit sake, I was taught how to catch a line drive in the 1rst freakin grade!!!!!

That was bad, really bad....almost as bad as Castillo's error.

Posted by: Double D

I still think they will make a series of it. I have a hard time believing they will lose tomorrow night. Ive heard alot of Cards fans killing Holliday saying they wish they never wouldve traded for him! What a bunch of idiots! If it werent for Holliday I highly doubt we wouldve made the playoffs!

If we win the next one I bet Carpenter goes on 3 days.

Posted by: min0 lee

Holliday said he lost it in the lights or was it the sun, it was happening to a lot of the other players

I mean he is human. It drives me nuts to hear people talk about how shitty it was, of course those are the same people who are fat and nonathletic! The same people who played chess in high school instead of baseball.

They really just need to get through the game today and I think they should have the right people going in order to win.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Whether he lost it in the lights or not.

They left 13 runners on Base. Inexcusable.

Posted by: Double D

Agreed.....its been that way the entire series. Molina hasnt been doing anything, hes always a double play waiting to happen, but normally hes pretty clutch. They need to pull their heads out of their ass and play like they have the entire second half!

Posted by: Double D

Pineiro had 21 quality starts out of 32, and was one of the Cardinals' chief stoppers, with six of his wins following defeats. He had a 2.87 ERA in 15 starts at Busch Stadium

Posted by: Triple Threat

Not much use for this thread any more.

Heres my question, were the Dodgers that good? Or was the Cardinals that pathetic? Frustrating to see nonsense such as that! I guess I will steal a quote from Cubs fans and say, "Just wait till next year!"

Posted by: Triple Threat

Quote:
Originally Posted by Malley View Post

A little of both. Card's bullpen gave away game 2, Holliday's error not withstanding. Carpenter didn't exactly pitch a gem. And the Dodger's #3 outpitched the Cards #3.

I really don't like these best of 5 series. The outcome probably would be the same, but there's very little margin for error.

Posted by: Double D

One of my friends was at their last game, he said they gave Holliday a standing O when he took the field and they chanted his name for 5 minutes when he came up to bat!

Posted by: min0 lee

I heard the same, Best fans in the world...Yankees second.

They booed Paps yesterday.

Posted by: Double D

So Mark McGwire hitting coach....

Thoughts?

Also saying that if Dave Duncan leaves they will bring in Mike Matheny as the pitching coach. I really dont see Duncan leaving though.

Posted by: min0 lee

When I heard about this I was kind of shocked.
He all but disapeared from the face of the earth.
What can a slugger like him teach?

Posted by: min0 lee

But if we can accept users like A-rod then I can't see why he can't coach.

Posted by: Double D

The first thing I thought was, wow hes really going to come back and listen to the questions nonstop for 3 months? I think after the first 3 months the questions will calm down much like they did with A-Rod, but lets face it hes the number 2 person I think of when I think riods and baseball. Of course big head Barry is numero uno.

He actually works will Puljos every single offseason, so he knows his shit.

I still am not 100% sure why they fired Hal Mcrae though? I know Tony had a press conference yesterday, but I missed it.

Posted by: I Are Baboon

Hitters who have gone to McGwire for help rave about him. Pujols credits McGwire the most for helping his swing. It'll be interesting to see him address the PED questions, though he probably won't say too much. I do wish him the best.

Posted by: min0 lee

Really? I wouldn't have thought that.

Posted by: Double D

I am sure he will not say anything about it. Hes pretty much stuck with, "the past is the past and I want to move forward" thing. I think he will do very well. Hes such a nice guy, not to mention hes a HUGE monster. If anyone did steroids its definitly him. But hey in the era when a ton of them did, how can you fault him ya know.
