Why is THE PUMP important?

A good pump clears the way for growth by stretching the fascia (thin membrane) that surrounds your muscles. This allows for a little more room for fluid to surround your muscles and aid in the healing growth process. If you continue to get a pump during your workouts and stay plenty hydrated you will appear to be bigger and fuller in your muscle bellies. Your body will heal your lean tissues faster and over time realize more growth.

i was just going to post asking if you can truly GROW getting a good pump. i am new in the weight lifting game, as per my first post ever on this board, i stated i came from a background of bicycle racing and before that a running background and swimming background. of course we trained with weights for strength , and i hit it as hard as i could, but to be a good runner, you run...
anyway, i plan on trying to put on 10# of muscle by spring time 2010. so i'm done with the 4 hour cycle training workouts.. time for the weights full time.. i am slowly getting the feel of doing hang cleans and bench presses, squats etc. again. today i did military presses. 100 reps.. just the bar.. it took 3 minutes 45 seconds.. i remember never ever getting a pump like this when i lifted weights doing my standard 15 -12 then 5 sets of 5.. after military presses today, i then did side laterals. 100 reps with 2.5 # ..took 4 minutes. pump was unreal.
i never ever remember getting a pump when i use to do these years ago. and then i think i was using 20# dumbells. from what i read, bodybuilders should not worry too much about weight.. that you should feel the muscle being worked.
i'm just going thru the motions these next few weeks just getting my muscles use to the weights again..
i will probably do the 15-12- warm up sets, then 5 sets of 5 for every body part..
just curious if doing these 100 rep workouts with very little weight do anything for you other than give you that super tight feeling..i wouldnt mind doing the 5 sets of 5 for strength and power, then do some workouts like these 100 rep exercises... but if the 100 rep workouts wont help, then i imagine its just a waste of time.. but man, was it ever a good pump..
thanks

You walk around all day and take hundreds upon hundreds of steps up and down stairs, ramps, inclines, flats...and your legs arent huge. You do some heavy squats once a week for a month or two, and the change in your development will be staggering.
The pump isn't indicative of a good workout. What do you hope to gain doing something easy a hundred or more times? The only way to improve is to do what you haven't done before.
If you are a certain size lifting 40kg, then lifting 45kg (something you've never lifted before) is going to stimulate growth because it's heavier. This is called progressive overload.
Don't train for a pump, train to be better than you are and give your body a reason to grow. If you get a pump, great, if you don't, who cares - you can see your progress by your heavier numbers.

Although, in theory, the pump can contribute to recovery and shuttling of nutrients into muscle tissue, it is not, in and of itself, a stimulus for growth.
So is muscle pump important? Yeah, it might have some effect. However, it should not be your goal to achieve the greatest pump.
