Looks pretty cool.

Motorola DROID first hands-on! (update: video, impressions, more pics)

Google Navigation video hands-on: you want this

I'm actually considering selling my iPhone 3gs & canceling my contract to get it. I can get about 500 for the iphone on ebay, then after the 175 fee to At&t for cancelling and the 199 for the droid, I'd come out about even... Monthly prices are the same, but with the droid I could use my google voice account & have free SMS... saves 15 bucks/month (360 bucks over the contract).

Good god yes. I've been foaming at the mouth for an Android phone since the G1, T-Mo just sucks too much. I'm getting it within a week of it coming out.

I'm SERIOUSLY considering it. I'm just leary about getting it so soon after it's released. But DAMN it looks sweet!

btw, does anybody know what the data plan is? I mean is it similar to the blackberry?

The plan I'm looking at is 79.99/month.. includes unlimited data/email & 450 minutes. Their plans are available at the website.

Tip: The phone is actually 299 and comes with a 100 dollar rebate (visa gift card). But, if you get it @ Best Buy, they will just sell it to you for 199 & they take care of the rebate.. I'll probably do that.

I went to Best Buy today and put down a $50 deposit on one. I'm not usually a fan of BB but they are giving you the instant rebate $100 instead of the mail in you'd have to use if you got it from Verizon.

Also they have a 30 day return policy in which they would also reset your ne2 clock so I figured I'd give it a try.

Great, now another choice to make.
Palm Pre, IPod, HTC and now this.

My Iphone is way too useful....I can tune my guitar, look up chords and scales, size PV systems, listen to audiobooks, read books, keep all my poetry I write on different computers synchronized, take angle measurements for slopes of roofs, I got so many apps for just about anything......until Droid can beat all that I'm sticking to what I know works and has plenty of apps.....

You can now start your car with it.

Android is going to be a fantastic platform.. especially when the development community doesn't have to be approved by apple with every update.

Example: Adobe engages Apple in passive aggressive warfare with iPhone's Flash message

The google voice app rejection is what convinced me to switch... maybe they'll fold eventually on it, but they'll keep rejecting innovative apps they may tread on their turf.. leaving the consumer without a choice. It's bullshit. Microsoft is always painted as the bad guys, but Apple is no better.

Posted by: maniclion

It would be in Apple's best interest to be a little more open to app builders, I do like that they screen them though so I know the apps aren't going to be hokey pieces of shit, nor break my phone.....

SHIT!

I'm reading conflicting stories, but if this is true I'm sticking with my iPhone... Stupid-ass move, Verizon. Especially when they keep comparing it to the iPhone... which doesn't charge 15 dollars for exchange access.

Unreal.

I'm thinking of just jailbreaking my iphone to install google voice...

Blacksn0w unlock available now for iPhone 3G and 3GS

Posted by: busyLivin

Wow.. that jailbreak was the easiest thing.. GV mobile installed and working beautifully!

I like some of the past Motorola phones, but Verizon as a carrier no. If Sprint were to offer it I'd really consider it, 3.7" screen sounds bad ass, I'm still on a Touch Pro.

Motorola Q9c was one of my favorite phones ever, if it had a faster CPU (to quickly open GPS) I'd probably still have it.

I remember just 8 years ago I had this Kyocera Palm OS SmartPhone

and thought it was so awesome and now we have these phones with touch screens, WIFI and accelerometers and GPS....

Is it just me or has technology been going really fucking fast?

My God, my dad had that phone!

If I recall that cost as much as an Iphone does now...

The best part of that was I could write in my own handwriting and it would convert it to text, very handy for notes....

I'm getting replies now from people saying exchange can be used on the unlimited data plan without the extra 15 dollars.. I don't know what to believe... maybe I'll talk to them in the store tonight...

No, they're incorrect unless the plans are different for Droid compared to Blackberries. I deal with that junk a lot at my job and it's been 30$ for "normal" internet, 45$ for "corporate" internet for quite a while. That applies to both Exchange and BES environments.

ok,the party is back on Friday...

I picked it up this morning, 30 dollar data plan & exchange is syncing fine.. not sure about blackberries.. unless I'm mistaken, RIM charges a fee anyway, so not sure that would be free.. maybe thats why blackberries require the higher rate?

Like the phone so far, but no time to play with it.. I should have bought it after work, this is a techie's torture!

YEP!

Picked mine up Friday too and so far it's SWEEEEET!

gmail is insta-sync along with the google calendar (both of which I've used for years). I dropped a bunch of songs on it to try it out and all is well. Surfing is fast and the whole unit is slick!

A few things I don't like (but am working around):
1. I think the physical keyboard is unnecessary - the onscreen one works great
2. micro usb charger - great, my house is already filled with mini usb chargers now I have to go buy micros oh well
3. no direct sync with outlook contacts and calendar. It's not a huge deal since I use gmail anyway but I had to do some uploading of my contacts to gmail. I never even bothered to check it out ahead of time because I figured it was a no brainer - even the iphone does it. Oh well.

Posted by: danzik17

I'll play with a live one at work on Monday (getting 2 there for demo purposes). That said, I played with an inactive one over the weekend.

I don't like the hardware keyboard. The keys offer no tactile feel and it's very hard to type quickly or accurately on it. I found myself hitting 2+ buttons a lot.

The software keyboard needs improvement as well. If I paced myself it did work just fine, but I often found it skipping letters if I typed as a normal pace (for me).

Another very big downside is the 256mb onboard memory. Yes, you can expand that, but apps can only be stored onboard without rooting the phone. I'm sure cyanogen will come up with a solution in like a week, but honestly I shouldn't need to do that...256mb for app storage is pathetic in this day and age.

Can't comment on other features until I play with it live tomorrow. I'm hoping the online functionality is what convinces me to drop some $$$ on it.

busyLivin: You are correct, the 15$ extra is what RIM charges for BES connectivity. We only use BBs in our world, so I've never worked with Exchange only (yet). After my discount, it comes to about 58.4$ MRC. Not too terrible at all.

Posted by: maniclion

You know I can type pretty well on the iphone, my trick is to keep my finger down and slide it to the right letter and lift for it to register, this also makes going to numbers/puncuation and back faster because it will bring up the numbers/punc options, you pick and then it automatically goes back to letters....

Posted by: busyLivin

I didn't like the keyboard at first either. The first time i tried it I actually thought about not getting the phone, but I actually have grown to love it now.. much more than the onscreen keyboard.

I like the phone a lot. Like danzik said the memory limit is pretty remarkable, although it's not really an issue for me yet: I've installed all the apps I need right now & took up less than 15mb.

As far as an mp3 player, it's not going to work out for me. I see an iPod in my near future...
