My Grampa, has heart disease. 12 Years ago he had 5 bypass surgery, went on a diet sponsored by the American Heart Association with only 20G of total Fat a day.

He was doing good but lately they have him on High Blood Pressure Medicine, a Blood thinner and something for gastritus (sp?) My Gramps is physically active for an elder person as well as my Gramdmother. They don't w8 train or anything but they have a home that they take care of themselves and do all their own yard work with a pool and everything. My grandfather also does some semi-speed walking, 2 miles everyday.

I personally don't think the diet he is on is helping. They eat tons of carbs, crappy sources of protein and no fats.

I was hoping someone might have some suggestions cuz these medicines are not helping and I think a new diet would make a world of difference.

Low Grain and Carbohydrate Diets Treat Hypoglycemia, Heart Disease, Diabetes Cancer and Nearly ALL Chronic Illness.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Slow Heart Disease

The AHA has reversed it's position on dieatary fat just recently.......saying Atkin's type programs are better. Additionally if you research lower carb and IR nutritional programs, you see evidence they lower total Cholesterol, raise HDL (the good chol.) and lower blood pressure. (danger here, lower BP will make the meds "too effective", and may cause side effects...see his health care provider)

Additionally, Yanick has an awesome story (trapped in my old PM box at ABC) about his grandma and such programs!

Why.....Yes i do DP!

Basically, my grandmother is a diabetic and an amputee (her left leg, above the knee was removed during WW II [train accident]), so for her physical activity is out of the question. She had to undergo a triple bypass about a year ago and was in pretty bad shape. No activity coupled with a shitty diet over the years has worn her out terribly.

After her surgery she was bedridden and all her measurements (the proper word has seemed to slip my mind, i mean cholesterol, blood sugar etc) were nowhere near stable or safe for that matter. Her blood sugar was in the area of 200+ mg/dl (don't know if that is the correct unit). We went to the doctor and he just kept adding more meds to my grandma's list.

My father finally got sick of all the meds and asked me to help my grandma out. I came over her house and outlined a diet for her. Everything was based on IR principles, which greatly help control blood sugar/insulin levels.

My grandma isn't one of those people who would actually count calories etc on her diet, so my diet needed to be simple. I made three columns, one for each macronutrient. In the columns i put the acceptable foods that we eat, very strict, no dairy, slow burning carbs, acceptable fats. She had already been eating more than 3 meals a day, so that was not a problem, but she had been eating garbage, processed meats with spaghetti and that kind of stuff.

I told her that everytime she was going to eat, she should pick out a food from every column and have that. That would be one meal. I also told her to eat as many greens as she could and that they didn't count at all in her diet.

The results were great. She has actually lowered her blood sugar medication, started moving around again on her crutches, started walking around the house, going to the bathroom by herself, going outside sometimes. Her blood sugar is very stable, in the area of 100 mg/dl. She feels great, and the doctor was amazed by this transformation, when he asked how she did it, she just told him she changed her diet and lowered her meds. The doc went crazy, lol.

So in closing i just want to say, doctors are asses except for DP that is

Thanks Yanick,
I really appreciate the story. It will be great inspiration for my Grandfather in changing his diet.

I hope that soon he will be able to lower the medication that they just keep pumping into him. I never could understand why the doctors always feel that if a medication isn't working, add more.

Thanks again.

No problem, i'm glad to help.

The funny part about the whole story is the fact that through out the whole ordeal (operation-present) the doc didn't say one word about being more active or changing diet. The only thing he talked about is more/different medications.

I have several elderly clients and yanick is right DR;s are asses when it comes to Nutrition. Most nutritionist's are as well. The big problem I have had with my older clients is getting them off of bread and butter, its like they grew up eating only that!!. Other than that I just make some modifacations for them and oatmeal is a must. I dont think there are any problems with diet and beta blockers, but Insulin may need to be adjusted as the diet gets better. I require a medication check every three months or so for my cardiac rehab clients to see if the can cut back on some of the heavy hitters.
