Getting back to fitness

Hi there, just wondering if someone could answer a few questions for me.

Right now, I am very out of shape and I wish to get myself back to tip top condition. I need to lose about a stone(ish) of body fat and/or turn some if it into muscle. Besides working hard at the gym etc. is there anything else I can do to lose weight and build muscle quickly? Are there any supplements/pills etc. that can be used which are proven to be effective and most importantly, safe to use?

I am quite physically active anyway, I play a lot of football (Soccer) but recently I have felt myself becoming more and more unfit and increasingly tired when I play. 6 months ago I could hack a 90 minute match without too much trouble, now I am struggling to manage 30 mins. A lot of this is because of my lifestyle. I drink around 4-8 cans of lager a night, and possibly up to 20 every now and again at a weekend. I don't look after my diet as well as I should either. What would the effect be if I were to cut out alcohol altogether. My body does seem to have become accustomed to my drinking habits and I havn't put on an excessive amount of weight due to it, I just find it nigh on impossible to lose weight.

Finally, is there anything else I can do other than the traditional tactics to regain my fitness ASAP? Once again, any suggestions of supplements etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot,
Jonny

the most important part of losing weight or gaining muscle is your diet...let's see that.

First thing I'd do is get rid of the booze.

LoL, I haven't had a beer in about 5 months, and probably 5 total in the last year. If I drink regularly besides added fat, I just feel a little more sluggish and old. How about go down to 1 a day or something and then maybe only on the weekends after that? I sin on saturday or sunday, and thats about it.

There comes a point when weight gain will stop if your caloric intake remains the same, but beer is catabolic so...

Alcohol
23% reduction in protein synthesis after 1 hr and 63% after 24 hours, blood ethanol levels were 448 mg/dl.

Even worse, ethanol causes a HORMONAL shift. It increases
estrogen through the up-regulation of the aromatase enzyme,
lowers testosterone, increases cortisol and to boot reduces
free T3 levels.
