You realize, of course, that you are only going to make it seem worse by getting jacked.
Just sayin'...

I was 50lbs overweight, the ticker locked up and put me down for the count. Lost the weight started working out and now it's like crack. Gotta do it or I have withdrawal symptoms The side effect of now being able to take my shirt off at the beach without being an embarrassment isn't bad either

Should have gone into distance running, I guess. My wife dated only women and Asian men before me, so she thinks I'm really hung...

So much for my attempts at humor. Oh well. To answer the question, I was kind of a chubby kid and I saw Pumping Iron as a kid and got obsessed. Started lifting and continued when I got into Junior High and High school because of football. Got a scholarship my senior year and played inside linebacker for four years at the college level. I started training at a hardcore gym during college and got hooked on power lifting and started competing. Did that during school and after for a little over 10 years.
Now I'm 43, and training with weights has always been part of my life. Had major back surgery last year, and couldn't train for six months. Felt like a part of me died. Scared the hell out of me 'cause the doc said I might not be able to lift anymore. Fortunately, progress has been excellent, and the laser procedure they used to repair the discs and nerve damage in my lower back worked like magic. After 30 years, I still love going to the gym. Sorry for the long-winded answer.

MDR, tell me about the surgical procedure used. PM me if it'll side-track this thread.
PS good to know you're better-hung than I am.

The procedure involved used a laser to cut down the length of time in surgery. The whole business took about 90 minutes. I had a discectomy on one disc and a laminectomy on the one just above. They discovered the nerve damage during the surgery, so they took care of that, too. One disc was completely herniated, and the other was just flattened. The total herniation was sticking out of my back and was visible. After the MRI they surgeon called me directly and scheduled the procedure for the next day. It was at Scripps hospital in San Diego. I understand that just a few years ago fusion was commonly used in such cases, or a manual procedure that takes hours longer, with far less chance for full recovery. Took me three months to begin physical therapy, and another three months to get back into the gym. Made my knee surgeries seem like nothing, but I feel very fortunate. It seems this method of disc repair is a major leap forward. Fusion is almost a guarantee for a lifetime of pain, and further procedures needed.

At one time I was horrifically skinny and weak. Friends at university invited me to go to the gym with them. Got hooked on it. They all eventually quit and I kept at it. Started out as a 165 lb sack of skin and bones and graduated at 220 lbs, reasonably strong.
But due to a child induced layoff I'm back. Instead of trying to put weight on I'm trying to take it off before going whole hog on weight training.
