Depends what your goals are. If your goal isn't realistic then yeah, you probably will fail at it. Most people fall into this trap by saying for example on the 20th June "By the time i go on holiday in two weeks i'll lose 60lbs!!!!".
Bullshit, not gonna happen.

Genetics is everything IMO. I've been working out hard for years and I see 1/5th the results of a black guy here at work that all he did "was stop drinking everynight." His arms have exploded, his bf has went from mid 20s to low teens in a year, he doesn't work out, he doesn't take protein, or eat anything besides what I consider crap.
Another black guy (not trying to be racist), eats cake, candy, pancakes, junk food all day, smokes cigarettes non-stop and looks like a bodybuilder. Sub 10% bf, veins popping out all over. Also doesn't lift weights or do anything physical (besides putting it to his girl).

Depends on your goals, but some people have better genetics. In highschool I played a football game against a guy that's in the NFL now. At 18 years old he was 6-2 235lbs probably 8 percent body fat. I have recently met some other guys that were on that team and they swear he never worked out. He would just set on the incline bench and watch everyone else.
I believe everyone can get into shape and look good, but some people have to work a lot harder.

I think given enough time, knowledge, and dedication, you can achieve your goal... granted that goal is realistic, of course.

This.
There's no point trying to compare yourself w/ other people - some people have certain genetics, but in trying to compare, its easy to be selective about what you are looking at - some people have an easy time getting lean but have a helluva time putting on muscle mass. Some people are energetic, but maybe they are on ADHD meds too. How old are the people you are comparing to? What is their history of training? What is their history of diet & food preferences? Lots of considerations.
I don't like pulling the genetics card because that is an excuse for people to just toss their goals and say they are excused for being fat slobs because of it. There is rarely an end game in "Fitness" - the goal is always moving because it is the journey and rarely the destination. It is also one thing to achieve a goal and another to maintain that goal.

My goal is to gain 78 pounds of muscle in three weeks. I hope that everybody always meets their goals, because if they do I'm gonna be a freak!!

I suspect you'd develop some monster joint / tendon issues w/ that goal....
