Taking time off

I just wanted to reiterate how important it is to take time off from training. It's a difficult thing to do especially when you're making good gains and progress, but it's necessary if you want to continue to make gains and remain injury free.

I was lifting very hard and heavy for the past 3-4 months and I started to exerience slight aches and pains in my shoulders, lower back and knees. I attribute this mostly to the fact that I was using heavy weights, low reps and compound movements every work-out hitting each muscle group once per week.

So, I decided to take off 7-10 days. Right now it has been 9 days, and I think I will start training again tomorrow.

Not only do I feel rejuvinated physically, and have no aches or pains, but I am rebuilding the mental drive to start hitting the weights hard and heavy once again!

Studies show that even longer periods of off time are necessary for the body to decondition itself thereby opening the door to greater growth.

HST recommends two weeks every other month or so (they call it strategic deconditioning). Par Deus has an article where he sites studies of greater layoffs for greater deconditioning, though that was an article on improved strength and athletic performance and not hypertrophy.

Yes, rest is very important and hard for us die hard gym rats to do.
However, I did find that I was really stiff not working out after a week, next time I'll remember to do some stretching.

Funny this has been posted.

I started to feel a little pain in my elbow and shoulder joints. I've decided to stop lifting weights for two weeks even though my recovery and desire to keep lifting is still very good. I started my "rest" last Monday.

During my two weeks "rest" I will continue to eat correctly and do sprints or jump rope in the morning ( btw, I don't do any cardio during weightlifting ).....

This morning I felt ten times more energized and feel a lot stronger. I guess it's neurologically good as well because of the less stress from weightlifting.

that's probably true, but I am having a hard enough time with 10 days off!

Dude, I didn't say I was doing it, just reporting what I read!!!

Seriously though I think 2 weeks is a good amount, and more and I'd go insane, though perhaps some day I'll get the nerve to INTENTIONALLY take a month off.

I was talking about that scene from austin powers where Austins dad asks Mini Me if his pecker was in proportion to his small body. Classic

Posted by: Robert D.
