Where should your knees be when doing squats? I thought I was doing mine fairly well, I just wasn't sure if I was going down low enough so I asked for tips from my wrestling coach.

I just grabbed the 45 lb bar and tried waht he told me.
He says the knees should stay back as far as possible, but when I try this even without any weights I fall over. He suggested sissy squats to get used to it, should I follow his advice?

say what?

you just squat, I do not know why you would try and make yourself fall over.

see this example:

I think what he may have meant was to NOT lean forward, keep your back as erect as possible through the movement.

hmmm...could be a flexability problem, or try putting 5lbs plates under your heels.

You want to make sure your knees don't go past your toes when you squat....stand sideways to the mirror and watch your knees, if they go past your toes, you need to sit back more...think of the motion of sitting in a chair....to practice that, you can try raising your hands out in front of you as you squat to keep your balance if it feels like you're going to fall over. Make sure your knees travel over your middle toes....no wobbling back and forth.

Sorry to sound like an idiot, but how can your knees go past your toes? Are your toes not on the ground when doing squats? how can anything go past the ground?!

You don't want your toes to go past the vertical plane that starts at you toes. In other words, you don't want your knees to be farther forward than you toes.

If his knees are going past his toes, then he's got bigger problems than proper form on squats!

Keep you knees out over your toes. Doing so will allow you to follow your natural strength curve - don't overanalyze your form - do what feels natural. Keep your back strait and your chin up - basically it's like sitting back in a chair.
