Hi.

Can anyone tell me what happens to the lactic acid produced by muscles during intense exertion?

Someone on MuscleTalk gave me a link to information on fatty acid metabolism: - http://www.np.edu.sg/~dept-bio/bioch.../aab_lipid.htm which people might find interesting.

K...well, I don't normally answer technie questions since I don't do 'techanese' well but....well, here's a clip from my text:

Lactic acid is another important metabolic by-product of exercise. During light-to-moderate exercise, sufficient oxygen is available to the working muscles. Consequently, lactic acid does not accumulate because the removal rate is greater than or equal to the production rate. If, at higher work intensities, aerobic metabolism is not sufficent to keep up w/ the formation of lactic acid, then the lactic acid level in the blood begins to rise. The aerobic exercise level at which lactic acid (converted to blood lactate at this point) begins to show an increase is termed the onset of blood lactate accumulation. In the case of high-intensity activity, heavy resistance exercise in particular, one of the mechanisms for providing energy is the glycolytic breakdown of glycogen to lactic acid (anaerobic metabolism). At the cessation of exercise, most of the lactic acid is reconverted into glucose in the liver while a small portion is converted to pyruvic acid and metabolized oxidatively.

*w8s for a better response from TCD* ??? lol

Does that help at all?

Ta for that. Where are your texts located - are they on this site?

The reason I asked is that I'm doing more intense exercises to reduce my insulin resistance. These exercises make my muscles ache - lactic acid, right?

My consultant won't prescribe me Metformin for my IR 'cos a) it's not licensed for treating IR in the UK, only diabetes, and b) there's a teensy-weensy risk of lactic acidosis.

In my house ....I just typed that out, lol.

Lactic acid is constantly being produced and flushed away via the blood stream. When you perform intense exercise, lactic acid builds up at too great of a pace to be carried away - this is why pain sets in. When you stop the movement the body has a chance to catch up and remove the acid from the muscle - I've heard that taking a teaspoon of baking soda prior to exercise can help eliminate lactic acid buildup - however, I've never tried this myself.

Hmmm.

Surely bicarb will just reduce acidity in the stomach - not good for digestion?
