i just did some of these with no machine or rack. the weight was to light to do anything to my hams, but my shoulders felt like they were on fire. any remedies?

Wrap a towel around the bar. Pull your elbows back flexing the traps and place the bar where it is most comfortable. You'll have to find the "spot". I like to place the bar across my lower traps behind the shoulders. It takes more arm strength to keep it secured but it works. I don't like the bar high up on my traps.

RC,, if you find that works for you,, you can buy a bar wrap to repace the towel (which is what I use). Its a heavy rubber with leather cover you wrap around mid bar and attaches with velcro. Works great.

now that you mention it i think i've seen those before, do you know anywhere online you can get them?

This also could have been since it was your first time ever doing them. Maybe if you try them again, you will feel less pain. I personally dont like using pads or towels or anything like that, but that is just me. But if you still really want to use them, then typically the gym where you belong (if you do belong to one) usually always have them.

or to go directly to accessories: http://www.fitnessfactory.com/Fitnes...tion&linkid=20

There's some articles at http://www.onelastrep.com/articles.htm that will show you how to squat. Basically you got to find a groove where the bar doesn't hurt. An experienced squater can "almost" take his hands off the bar and still perform the exercise. You'll get it if you keep practicing.

Agrees with Joe again. You have to find the sweet spot. I hold the bar with 2 fingers on each side.
